What is This Award?

What is the 'Joe Snyder Award'? WNPV Lansdale brags of winning it for their news coverage 3 years in a row on their TOH ID. Is this awarded based on overall performance of the station, or just from submitted sample tapes?

WNPV's news coverage has been going downhill. Veteran (WPEN, WBUX) newscaster Randy Brock does the morning news every half hour, but now its the same stories in the same order every time, then its recorded and the same newscast played back every hour all day. No breaking stories, no updates, just what's in the newspaper at 6am. They used to have someone update the weather live each hour, now its just the recorded forecast with the Shadow traffic person giving the temp (sometimes). They used to have live, updated news every half hour all day.
So much for the "info" in "Info-Radio", except for drive time and a few remotes & sports events just another satellite and infomercial station. Too bad.

This sounds like another reason to turn off FM and tune in XM....why? Because aside from "sound-alike" FM stations, there truthfully is nothing on FM anymore.

Two things. One...last I checked WNPV is on the AM band, not FM. (Sounds like you work for XM anyway.)
Two...to answer the original question...the award is given annually by the Associated Press to three radio stations in Pennsylvania...one major, one medium and one small market...based on submissions from said stations on news coverage, and story contributions to the group. It's supposed to reflect the excellence of the operation in overall news coverage and service to the community.
I'm sure that'll open up a can of worms regarding some people's opinion of WNPV. Still...given the veritable lack of newsrooms in small markets like Lansdale...you ought to give WNPV credit for even keeping their newsroom open. And trust me when I tell you Randy Brock is truly one of the hardest working people in our business.

I always thought he was an excellent newscaster & WNPV getting him was a good move for them. But I don't understand if he is there live for the morning newscasts why its the same stories, same order, same audio clips every time. He used to change the stories between the hour & half hour newscasts.

Not sure if the average listener understands, but once I listen at 6am I tune the station out the rest of the day, where I used to check in for several newscasts a day (the 'B' level syndicated programming is a waste of time, I do sometimes listen to the local call-in "Comment Please" although its the same callers, same gripes every day unless there are guests). It's like once you've read the newspaper in the morning, it doesn't change all day!

WNPV is still good for community remotes & sports, but I miss the full-service format of the past.

RubberBalls is a sales rep for another suburban AM station, located in West Chester. At least Randy Brock has stayed in place; RubberBall's station changes news announcers every few months. And from what I can hear, WNPV's news broadcasts are not used to promote the owner's pet causes, while shutting out groups with which the owner disagrees. And, from what I hear, WNPV actually has people go out on stories, rather than lifting them from the newspaper. And Randy Brock sounds major league - his voice, his presentation, his writing; in contrast... well, you get the idea.

I don't know if your employer would like you coming on here praising XM and running down radio.

I believe the newscaster who proceeded Randy Brock at WNPV years back (can't recall his name, maybe Bill?, he replaced Jenny Robinson who went to KYW then Penndot) left to go to WCOJ as morning newscaster, but was gone in months, while Randy remains. WNPV used to do more spot news coverage, now it does sound like Intelligencer & Reporter headlines, and as I said, they just read the same stories all day, unlike their excellent all day coverage a few years back.

And what do you get from XM? A whole lot of voice-tracked, underproduced stations. All the things things that are bad about radio times 100, minus the commercials. I tried it for a while and hated it. For me the math wasn't good enough to be worth the money. Now I listen to terrestrial radio and when I get sick of that, I listen to CDs in my 6 disc changer. I like my mix better than anything XM put together. For the cost of the satellite hardware and a year subscription you can get a nice CD changer for your car if you don't have one already.
