Usually, I just read this board but felt today was a good time to join after reading this post.
I have been listening to this station for awhile now since I moved to Boston, and I must say I was very disapointed in this stunt. When Ramiro 1st made mention of his "contract" situation Friday, I knew something was up (especially since a friend of mine works there and confirmend that he was well under contract). The way he acted on air was so not like him and just came off as fake.
What really made me scratch my head on this one, was that for the most part, this show sounds great and as much as we (the radio insiders) know that most of the bits etc. are set up, it still comes off as believeable to the true listeners. This one however, came off as fake as could be from the begining. He would even mess up by talking about what was going to be happening next week and then catch himself and say "well, I mean if I am still here" and things like that. Even listening today, whoever the people were who were "the new show" just were bad and nervous sounding. It was like they grabbed 2 interns and tossed them on the air to play the part. They even ran a Ramiro drop in the mix with Mase that quickly was cutoff before it said Ramiro and Pebbles. I am sure that was an accident that it ran. They even went as far as to say Pebbles was fired as well, but for some reason the shows 3rd wheel Melissa was left behind to be with the new show which sounded even more odd. It almost would've been better to pull her off as well. You could tell she felt very odd being on the air with them (more in a way like even she new this bit was bad idea).
The point is, that this is a pretty good show. Why would they go through all of the time, resourses & trouble to create new production, make Ramiro sound kinda like a jerk (calling the GM a "******") and then put on 1 1/2 hours of HORRIBLE radio 2 days before the book starts? To me, it was just a bad Aprils Fools Joke that had 0 benefit to the listeners or the station.
This is a show that usually thinks outside of the box and is creative with the things that they do and for the most part, even I beleive it, even though I should know better that most of it is set up. I have to think that this bit today made a majority of the listeners think that Ramiro thinks they are dumb and would fall for this.
Are April Fools Jokes still a big thing on air? Did anyone else do anything? Is it just too predictable? I think a stunt like this is so generic and done so many times before across the country (and done much better I hope). I know JAMN has the perception of being a young audience station, but they are consistantly #1 18-34 and top 5 25-54 so there are alot of older listeners who I am sure, like myself, were turned off by this.
Just my 2 cents....I am not trying to attack anyone....I was just confused as to why they did this the way they did. And yes, I do know the easy answer is "Well, it is April Fools" but I think in a top market like this and being a top station like JAMN I just think they were better off doing something else.
Any one else here it?
