What Is Up at Channel 5?

It seems like they're taking forever to replace anchors at WEWS. They still haven't replace Ted Henry after none of the in-house staffers who were trying out worked out. (Tim White, former WKYC anchor, was rumored, but didn't work out) Not to mention, they dropped their morning team, but have yet to replace them as well.

Are they really struggling to find the right talent? Or are they incapable of replacing anybody? Every year it seems there are more people leaving than arriving. That station is looking worse than 3, 8 and even 19! Channel 8 is better able to hire people than 5 nowadays.

I wanna believe 5 will have their morning team figured out by Sept 19 (start of the new fall season).

They have found some stability post Ted Henry with Bibb/Harris/Jordan from noon-11 p.m. (Bibb at noon, Harris/Jordan at 5, Bibb/Jordan at 6, Harris at 11).

I'm told they're auditioning co-anchors for Danita at 11.

Really, would it be the "NewsChannel 5" we all know and love without constant anchor shuffling? :D

For decades TV5 was a non-union TV station. They've always been known to be kinda cheapskates.

And, from what I've read, local/broadcast TV advertising sales has really taken a hit comparred to 5 or 10 years ago, supposedly due to the fragmentation of TV viewing caused by cable channels.

Anybody else know anything more specific?

Fron writing historical articles on Cleveland Television the last 4 years or more, I'd looked at specific patterns, specificially in the 50's and 60's..

Channels 3 and 8 used to really spend the ad dollars in places such as TV Guide and the local newspapers..From 1953-early 70's or so, you could count on a full-page ad from both 3 and 8 each week in TV Guide..

WEWS Channel 5 spent a lot less on advertising historically..A lot fewer full-page TV Guide ads..More often than not, ads would be much smaller..As often as not the show sponsor would take out an ad such as "Fishers Foods presents the Quarterback Club with Ken Coleman", etc..

The same was true in the news area..Channel 5 was the last of the big 3 to build a decent size news department..Not really spending money on news till 1968 or so..They were also the last [Between 3, 5, and 8] to do local color shows..For many years the only color show in the schedule was The Tonight Show when WEWS carried it..

The Tonight Show (you mean Johnny Carson/Leno's)? That's always been an NBC show.

The big problem with local broadcast TV stations: big audience drops due to heavy increases in cable TV network viewing...thus, billions of formerly broadcast TV ad dollars are now being spent on cable and web platforms.

I don't recall ever seeing as many 1-location "Ma & Pa" type businesses running spots on local TV channels as I do these days. They run in the morning news shows & evenings, prime & pre-prime....not just overnights as filler revenue.

Plus remember that Westinghouse was in the process of suing NBC for extortion in the 1956 radio/TV station swap between Philadelphia and Cleveland (NBC allegedly threatened to pull WBZ-TV/Boston's affiliation had the swap not gone through), so they weren't that happy with the network to begin with.

I think I saw on Wikipedia that Channel 5 apparently has a new 11pm anchor - Daniella Guzman from KRPC in Houston - but she's still listed on the Houston's station website. I would rather wait until Channel 5 officially announces who's going to anchor at the station. Plus, if they do pair Danita Harris with Guzman, that would be a bad move.

I think Channel 5 has (finally) found their new weeknight anchor, and its not that woman I mentioned earlier on Wikipedia. (She's since been taken off)

Chris Flanagan, from WFAA/8 in Dallas, TX, is coming to 5 and I assume he'll be the 11pm co-anchor. I saw his clips on YouTube and I think he'll be a great addition.

I also think there was a weekend anchor from Miami who auditioned at 5, but went to Los Angeles instead. Now, I wonder who's going to be their morning anchor team. I hope whoever they pick will be around for years. There's been a lot of instability on 5 in the AM.

Yep, it's Flanagan who will be the 11 PM co-anchor. Confirmed by TVSpy/MediaBistro (ex-ShopTalk) on Friday.

They have auditioned a LOT of people for that job.

In a perfect world...

Leon Bibb and Lee Jordan go to mornings, current interim morning anchor Maurielle Lue does the noon show, and Chris Flanagan and Danita Harris do 5, 6, and 11 p.m.

Channel 5 (as per their website) has reported that Macie McGinnis-Jepson has been signed to become the new morning anchor (with a co-anchor to be named) beginning in late November.

Back in the day (namely mid-late 90s), Macie was at WJW doing mornings, then noon and 5 p.m. with Bill Martin (Macie was actually Stacy Bell's predecessor).

MM-J has been in Dallas in recent years (where coincidentially, soon-to-be 11 p.m. co-anchor Chris Flanagan is coming from).

Ironically, both Macie & Chris are coming from the same station in Dallas - WFAA 8. Macie had worked at WFAA for eight years until 2008, months before Chris joined the same station. It will be interesting if those two ever pair up on a broadcast.

I think the MMJ coming is Josh Boose from WGRZ in Buffalo (which is WKYC's sister station through Gannett), probably replacing Justin Michaels. WEWS really seems to be rebuilding their morning newscast. I wish the new staffers luck. I've seen on FB a lot of negative comments on 5 for letting Pete Kenworthy & Kimberly Gill, & how viewers are not coming back. One guy in particular is incredibly bitter about the station in general. I'm willing to give the new people a chance.

I can't wait for Macie to come back. I enjoyed her work on WJW from Good Day Cleveland, Fox 8 News in the Morning, the news 5pm, 6pm & Noon. She was missed.

Yes, the new GMC MMJ is Josh Boose from WGRZ...it's in our item posted yesterday afternoon. It has been officially announced in the building.

No idea who Macie's co-anchor will be...we're tracking it, but haven't heard any names yet.

Oddly enough, I have never seen Macie...I was gone from the region the entire time she was at Fox 8 News.

Forgive my ignorance, but what does the acronym "MMJ" mean? I thought we were only referring to Macie until someone wrote "there's an MMJ coming along with Macie..." ???
