What is up with BPM?

Yesterday 6:19pm BPM played "Forever Young" from Alphaville. Let's hope they forgot to clean up their playlist 8)
 
Interesting........when I listened to BPM last week, I was hearing a ton of new stuff and thought they were sounding good. I actually came to the board to see if people were commenting on that and now I read that they are playing old 80s stuff (I haven't tuned in the last couple of days). That just burst my bubble.
 
I dont dislike those songs listed as I love 80s POP/Rock... but I dont tune into BPM to hear those 80s songs,, at least if they are gonna play 80s,, why not play Freestyle,, Hi NRG Italio Dance,, or even the rhythmic pop stuff like Samantha fox ETC.... But those songs belong on an 80s or New wave station, not a current Dance station.. My G/F internet has been out for a few days and says BPM sucks now, and it drove her back to Pop 2k, and 20 on 20,, nothing wrong with those channels, but they are losing the potential Young end of dance by going back that style,, Worse than KTU... I told her to listen to Area, and she loves it, says its the best dance station she has ever heard, but says the repeats are too much... I always like THE MOVE on XM for pure House,,, and Progressive,, Drum n Bass ETC,, why they killed that channel is beyond me,, but Area was always the second best Sat Channel,,, so its no wonder why dance fans are cancelling, or going back to POP and hip Hop like my girl did... She loves stations like I-party and KHNC, and Bretts station, though shortly after she gets home from school they switch from Dance, and dont go back to Dance until she has long been asleep. She is younger than me and gets in trouble for playing anything explicit, she got in trouble for playing Buck Cherry's Cray B.tch Unedited yesterday,,, yet her mom and grandma didnt even notice on the song DOCTOR Pressure during the part that says Mother F>>> gonna drop the pressure....

Maybe if it was the 90's Eurodance remake by the Canadian group TEMPERANCE, I would say...okay, its a way back recurrent. But not this.

I still say give it some time. Mike Abrams and Skyy are good guys and they want to make it the best dance station that they can. :)
 
At 7:56PM ET, I just heard "Hungry Like The Wolf" by Duran Duran. It's a great song...a classic even. But it belongs on the 80's channel, NOT "The Worlds Premier Dance Channel".

I've also sent email to the [email protected] mailbox, but so far no reply.

Anyone have any other ideas about how to express our displeasure?

JWP, let me try something here. I suppose the only thing we can all do here is be as patient as possible. I know, I know...dance music fans are IMPATIENT people because we are CORE to the music and want the best! ;D But in this case, let's just wait it out and see what happens in the next couple of days!
 
Well, I feel strongly enough about this that I actually signed up, just to post about this.

BPM has gone straight down the toilet. Being born and raised in Chicago, once Energy 92.5/7 went away I was constantly searching for something that could fill its shoes. When I found BPM I thought I had the answer. The music was good, they had a lot of new cutting edge stuff. It wasn't too trancey. It was just good dance.

And now what is it? A combination of 80's songs (sometimes remixed) and pop songs (sometimes remixed). What the hell? Who thought that was a good idea? On March 16, 2009 I was writing down songs that I couldn't believe were being played. I finally gave up because every song played was on the list. Here's an excerpt:

Taylor Swift – Love Story (Jason Nevins Remix)
Beyonce – Halo [Karmatronic mix]
Elliot Yamin – Wait for you (Jason Nevins Mix)
Akon/O’Donis – Beautiful (Mike Rizzo Mix)


I heard the Taylor Swift song on B96, a hip-hop station here and questioned why they were playing it. I nearly killed myself when I heard it come on BPM the next morning.

I have joined the little BPM club where you rate their songs. I've sent an email asking for explanation. Nothing has changed in my opinion. As of 3/26 I've gone to www.di.fm. Goodbye BPM, you ****ed a good thing up with your bullshit.

Seriously...I think I nearly flipped when at 4:50 this afternoon I heard "Lovefool" by the Cardigans. The original pop mix. The one that has been burned to death on every AC station on the planet for at least the last decade. I was on the elliptical at the gym at that moment and nearly injured myself verifying that I hadn't somehow accidentally switch channels on my Inno to The Heart or 90's on 9. It's an OK song...and I'm sure it tests well for AC radio, but could someone please explain to me how anyone EVER thought it should spin on dance channel?

This is getting stoopid.

Now let's not forget that Energy 92.7/5 did feature pop remixes, from Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Aaliyah, to even New Life Crisis at the time. Remember how Energy was spinning Thunderpuss's remix of "Lady Marmalade" so many times? But I do agree, at this point Energy Chicago was better in playing good dance than the "New" BPM. IMO, I really don't mind pop remixes, as long as it sounds good. Maybe the Digital Dog remix of Love Story could be acceptable, Karmatronic rmx of Halo is ok, but I like DJ Escape's better. Mike Rizzo, majority of his remixes are good till this day. Nevins, he's got a breakbeat, rock, electro, trip-hop thing going. But what happened here, it seems BPM is getting softer by the second and can't decide if they are dance or 80's Hot AC. What's next from BPM, "Whip It?"
 
I did speak to the powers that be over there.

They assured me that the 80's was going to be gone for the most part, except for certain tracks like New Order. I know SiriusXM doesn't have the money but down the road there should be a dance channel dedicated to the 80s and early 90's. Call it "The Palladium" after the legendary NYC nightclub of that time.
 
How come none of these things ever happen when I tune in? But then again I never last long on Satellite radio without eventually switching to BBC Radio 1 or watching a regular t.v. channel. All I get is "A little bit of ecstacy" by Jocelyn Enriquez within a few minutes of tuning in to BPM - if I stay long enough. It's happened twice in a row so far...

"Miles away" by Madonna is playing right now. I never knew that was a hit... Too bad people have to get older because now this means they'll be discriminated against due to age rather than judged by the quality music they make. Too bad I am almost 30. If I am to make any hits, I better do it quick because in 2 years I'll be 30 and to some of the younger generation music world I probably would already have become an insignificant piece of dust. I can't think of anyone who started their music career singing at the age of 30 or later... but maybe that's just my old age affecting my memory.

Seriously speaking though, I think The Beat was much better. I don't know what it is about BPM, but it's not as good as The Beat. I cannot personally blame the type of things that others are claiming to hear on BPM since I didn't personally experience hearing those tracks play on BPM for myself, but I don't doubt that it's happening. Hmmm.. Ercola must be big, too. Why am I missing all this stuff? I'm beginning to question whether or not I'm a true dance fan.... maybe the rhythmic section is where I should be. My taste is unclassifiable.

So far, I've only been hearing "normal" music on BPM, and I'm about to change it anyway, so.. Murphy's Law wins again. It will not happen as long as I monitor it.

Very true, energy did play pop remixes, but at least the majority of their remixes were dance. Some of the BPM remixes they've been playing are slower than the original version. Not to say that all dance needs to be fast, but these remixes can hardly be classified as dance. And I'm not against pop remixes. LMFAO has some awesome remixes out right now. There's a couple good remixes to Lady Gaga - Poker Face. A good dance-pop remix needs to be founded on good songs to begin with. Jason Nevins, Karmatronic, Mike Rizzo, they're all great DJ's who usually make great remixes. I guess when your starting canvas is Taylor Swift - Love Story it's hard to make something worth listening to, which begs the question why bother?
 
I like the Dance Version of Taylor Swifts Love Story,, but yeah, some songs just arent meant to be Dance hits and shouldnt be remixed... You ever heard the remix of Evenessence-Bring me to Life, or the Dance version of Linkin Park-Bleed it out...Absolutely horrible,,,, those songs were fine in their original form, not every song can or should be remixed for the Clubs and dance stations. Another bad remix is the UK Bassline Garage 4x4 mix of Leona Lewis Bleeding Love,, and I didnt care for the standard Dance version that the US stations played either, some songs were just mean to be slow, and they sound like the singer is jacked up on speed when played with that beat.
 
So I went back to BPM today and decided to list some of the pop-remix songs I heard:


Britney Spears - Circus (F&L Remix) - While I'm not a huge fan, I deyo consider it dance and don't have a problem with BPM playing it.
Akon/Kolby O'Donis - Beautiful (Mike Rizzo Mix) - I admit, I hate this song because I hate Akon and am sick of him... but it's questionable on a dance station.
Britney Spears - If You Seek Amy (Mike Rizzo Mix) - Not much different than the original...
Beyonce - Naughty Girl (Remix) - Original did nothing for me, remix does even less.
Mario - Let Me Love you (Remix) - seriously? That's not even pop, it's R&B, and the remix didn't add anything to the original.
Pink - U + UR Hand (Bimbo Jones) - a well done remix to a crappy song
Britney Spears - And Then We Kiss (Junkie XL) - why?
Katy Perry - I Kissed A Girl (Marc/BamBamMix) - awesome pop-remix to a song I consider less than stellar in original form.
Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone (Nevins Mix) - guilty pleasure, questionable as dance but I don't mind it.

Only 80's I specifically noticed (had it on at work, wasn't paying attention 100% of the time):

As far as teh pop-remixes go, most of them were heard at least twice throught the day. I will admit that there was more actual dance music on today than last week which made me happy, but for a stations that claims to be a dance music station there still seemed to be too much questionable crap on there. And I didn't hear one song I would consider to be new. When I hear new dance songs on B96 before BPM there is a problem.

Old age? Nearing 30? HAH! I'm 42! (will be 43 on 9-30) :)

BTW, I did tune in today (4-2) and the music was current/recurrents (but back to about 2000). I haven't heard 80's stuff.
 
Im coming up on 30 as well.. I think Chrles is over 30,,, we still like dance, CHR, Rock, and Rhythmic music, as well as 80s classics,,, the thing is,,, certain songs should not be played on certain stations,,, For instance, I love the song Mr Mister-Broken Wings,,, but if I heard a dance station play it, it would turn me off cause if I want to hear Current dance, then I am not in the mood for that song,,, if its an 80s, Jack, or a AC station then thats fine, same goes for Active Rock, another format I love, but I dont want to hear 3 days Grace, or Disturbed on a dance station, especially a sat station that has other stations dedicatd to that format...

BPM,,, Bring back Alan Freed, and the real dance you used to play,,, BPM was best in the Maxwell House days, and the Alan Freed days.... i never been a fan of Sky,,, I think he has an EGO, and not a good Dance programmer... I do like Vic Latino, is he still on BPM, is he just on party 105 now?????
 
Well Im glad,, Vic belongs at a mass appeal station that supports Dance.. Vic was great on KTU and WPYO Orlando back in the day.. Some have said he isnt nice, but he has always been cool with me,, he just wants to succeed with Dance with other music that draw in the Masses....


Big Up to Vic,,, he is a good guy,,,, and he has the power to make Dance work, even if the station has to play Hip Hop as well..... Party has done better in numbers since VIC has been there,,, he is rich, and owns Bars, and Restaurants, ETC.... I think party is safe with keeping a good deal of dance as long as Vic stays.

Sucks that party fired Dre Dog though, but I think they realise now that was a mistake.

Well, Andre is on Pulse 87 so he did find a job rather quickly after Party let him go. And Vic is a good guy.
