WHAT IS UP WITH K-104.7?

Attention Mr. PD of K-104.7,

You should really be paying attention to your radio station over the weekend. Last Saturday night, I was listening to this "major market" radio station and heard inexcusable goofs! Your station went straight into a stopset out of a song with no calls. Then out of the same break, here came the weather bed... with no weather forecast!!! Unbelievable. Ya know, I can get that kind of great radio back in my hometown.

If you wanna compete with Lite, you gotta do much better than this sloppy execution. Hey, if you have to come in and run the board "live", I would do that....just for the sake of job security.

Just thought you oughta know...

booger!

It is a shame. Otherwise K1047 is a great station.<P ID="signature">______________

Plus, the jocks talk over the vocals on the intros & run the sweepers over the vocals over the intros - can't they hear that?

Plus, Tom Jeffries mumbles & Holly Haze always sounds like she has a cold.

When they automate or voicetrack at night, they should make sure every stopset has a sweeper into the spots & out of the spots into the music, plus make sure theres a forecast to go with the wx bed.

I really put my foot in my mouth...

<strike>Personally, I think the station sounds like crap - a bunch of music I don't want to hear, weak personalities. About the only thing they have going are the jingles. Star was marginally better than this K104.7 crap, and had much cooler calls at that.</strike>

I think it is great that all of you get on here with your constructive criticism; personally I believe any criticsm is good. Unfortunately I do not get to read all these postings as I do not have the time, but I, like some jocks, try to read these boards when time permits.>
What many of you don't understand, even if you think you know the radio business, is that 99% of what happens is out of the jock's hands. We go to work and liners are presented to us, our tone and delivery presentation is explained to us. Long gone are the radio days of spinning records and opening the mic for a chance to banter at free will.
Yes, a great portion of today's radio is voicetracked (recorded) and once again, OUT OF OUR HANDS. If there is a computer glitch, there is nothing the jock can do about it. We are told when we will voice track. We don't do it just because we feel like it. If you haven't figured it out yet, it SAVES the big companies alot of money to do it that way. I have seen some of the greatest in the biz replaced by a tracked jock. I have had the pleasure of working with Dallas Reese and Samantha Stone and Sander Walker...just to name a few from the old Star days. It is sad when they leave...some bounce back, some don't. Tom Jefferies has been handed K and is working well with the small amount of resources he has. He is a great PD and a great jock.
Keep in mind that the jocks sit back and have all the same exact ideas you have on how to improve the radio station, all of them..those with good ratings as well as bad. We ALL have our good books and our bad books. The whole industry is a wild rollercoaster.
So, in closing, it is great that you write and that you actually are under the impression that it will help in the long run....but rest assured, it will not. Bottom line is, as with any thing in life, if you like it...listen. If you don't...by all means, turn the station. Free will...what a beautiful thing.
On a final note....prayers go out to the family and friends of Doug Fleming.

My last post was unfairly harsh and mean spirited, and for that I apologize. Sometimes my mouth (err...fingers) gets a bit ahead of my brain. it was purely destructive criticism, and out-of-line.

I do realize that the jocks often have their hands tied, but I didn't have any idea to just how tightly. It's really a disservice to the DJs as well as the listeners, because the we listeneres are subjected to boring homogeny and the DJs are forced to push buttons on a comptuer and become yet another voice on the radio, something that is in no way representitive of their true personaility. And having your presentation dictated to you...that's wrong and insulting. Again, for the tone of my last post, I'm truly sorry.

As a listener, I can't really say I understand your frustration with voicetracking (since I don't work with it), but I do understand your frustration at personalities being replaced with a computer.

With that being said, I do still listen to 104.7, but not as much as I used to in Star days, due to the format change and the arrival of Hitz 94.

Thanks for your most recent posting. Keep in mind that you have a right to your opinion and an apology was not necessary. And these postings are exactly the reason behind this website. I was just trying to emphasize that there are things that are out of the hands of the jocks. I cannot force anyone to listen to K or any other station. I can tell you honestly that I listen to it all....you just like what you like, but I wanted it known that most of the things that people complain about (including a jock's voice) are things that the jock surely cannot change and most of the time the PD can't even change. It is a small world, this radio business. Three out of K's 4 jocks have worked at Lite before. There is a strong respect and camaraderie for all of us in this business..moreso now. We get as frustrated as you, the listeners. Lastly, we are far more critical of ourselves than anyone posting these messages could ever be. So keep up the constructive criticism..it is welcome anytime...but remember, your efforts may be futile.

I still felt really bad though...even after I posted it, I wasn't comfortable with how tactless it was.

I'm one of those ecclectic types... WDAV, Rock 92, Oldies 93, Hitz 94, WQFS, WSNC, WVTF, WFAE (home)/WUVT (school), 96-3 WROV, WSLQ (Q99) and WPAQ AM (Day)/CHWO AM (Night) round out my car's presets. It's just hard to find anything other than a CHR or AC variant on a decent enough signal to get in an office building (and that's with some creative antenna work at my cube)

Holly,

You said it better than I could have, just like your on air work.

I told Tom, I had a better "show" after watching you a couple of weeks ago.

I'm surprised the people here didn't realize we don't have that much control over content....not at K and not at Lite. I enjoyed freedom on the air but it was a long time ago when WBT still played music.

Even with the liners and the voice tracking and everything else that's wrong with radio today I still enjoy being in the studio. It's in the blood and probably always will be.

I also agree with what you said about the folks at Lite, great people and most are very good friends. It's amazing to me that I have known Production Director Bob Brandon for 24 years now, going back to when we both worked at WSOC.

I for one am glad you care. It was always the active listeners I enjoyed the most. We both want the same thing, good creative radio but the powers that be say keep the music going and keep the breaks as short as possible.

Like many in radio I started doing overnights and the one good thing about it is the audience has fewer distractions, and they listen intently to the person on the radio. When I gave the wrong time the request line would light up and I got told about it, not from the PD but listeners! Initally it ticked me off but I came to appreciate that someone was out there listening and paying attention.

Thanks for listening, whenever you happen to do so.

Mike

Uh...sure it will help...especially if the PD reads this and wakes up. This has nothing to do with jocks...it had to do with mistakes and shouldn't happen. And if the GM reads this....you can bet it can make a difference.

The P.D. is not sleeping. He just doesn't listen to the station 24/7 and I don't blame him. Anytime you turn automation on and expect it to work without problems you are in for a rude surprise.

For a moment lets take the spotlight off K-104.7 and put it on the Clear Channel stations. They had some awful problems which caused them to miss spots and lose $$. Clear Channel learned that even though they voice track and turned on the computer they had to hire operators whos job is to sit and listen to the stations to prevent problems.

The people aren't the problem it's what you get from the constraints the people at the station work with.

Mike
