What is up with KCSN lately?!

Why the sudden adds of RHCP, Depeche Mode, and The B-52's (and, most recently, Blondie)?!? I'm sure there are weirder choices they could add to their lineup, but come on!! Does "Give It Away" and "Higher Ground" (the RHCP version) REALLY belong on the lineup of a "mellow" station like KCSN?!? I'm fine with something like "Under the Bridge" being played on there, but those choices are just weird!! DM, The B-52's, and Blondie all have a more tightly-wound feel to their music than, say, The Police, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, or Pretenders - to me their music just has a more "organic" feel, no matter how "punkish" they might get.

Also why the sudden demand for not-so-fitting Zeppelin songs ("Kashmir", anyone?) Pleeeassssee tell me KCSN isn't turning into ANOTHER "The Sound" or I will be really sad :( They might as well add Devo, The Cure, Violent Femmes, Oingo Boingo, The Pixies, Television, and The Smashing Pumpkins while they're at it!! Sheesh! I think the inclusion of such bands would make their station sound more "commercial" :( Can't ANYONE get Triple-A RIGHT anymore?!? It's really weird...

I feel your pain, AAAGeek. KCSN is definitely not my cup o'tea, too mellow for my taste. YMMV you know. As to your statement quoted above, it's tough to find a station that does AAA well. The infusion of inappropriate tracks (not artists, tracks) has led to some in the genre sounding like they're "selling out" and those that do are forgetting the AAA format is a niche format, therefore enough tracks on the playlist need to be different from any other rock station.

I have listened for years and years and years to many OTA stations streaming the format, some which are history, but the one station I keep going back to (they're not perfect, but none are anyway) is 107.1 The Peak WXPK-FM White Plains/Briarcliffe Manor, NY ("New York's Backyard").

Our "quote" function is working fine. It only cut and pastes what it is asked to. When copying content like this off another site, please be aware that you're also copying any XML or HTML encoding. To avoid that you would have to strip the citation of all such coding and save it as ASCII text. You may have to paste such excerpts into a word processing document and strip it in there. I'm familiar with The Peak (though I prefer WRNR myself). The songs you cited are songs, that, for the most part, would be apt for my ideal Triple-A lineup. However there are a couple songs that are debatable for the category IMO - The T. Rex and ELO are DEFINITELY debatable (as much as I love T. Rex), and I adore The Kinks, but "Low Budget" would NOT be what I'd put on a Triple-A playlist. I've also never understood why "Uprising" by Muse got on enough Triple-A stations to reach the Top 20 back in late December/early January, but no matter. Other than that it's fine :) Newer artists seem to be nearly homogenous on Triple-A stations, but "older" artists ('90s and below) tend to be mixed. For me Music Choice Adult Alt. has been the closest to a Triple-A format that I think "does it right" (with the exception of the John Mayer, Jason Mraz, etc. they play on there but all the alt/indie/occasional classic rock material on there compensates for that IMO).

For '70s, '80s, '90s artists - my "regulars" would include Elvis Costello, The Police, The Pretenders, U2, R.E.M., Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel, Pearl Jam, Gin Blossoms, Counting Crows, Radiohead, and Oasis (and for the "pre-alt" artists, I'd have plenty of Springsteen, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, and Bob Dylan). Mucking it up with (too much) The Who, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, etc. would spoil it for me :( Same goes for The B-52's, Depeche Mode, Blondie, and any other new wave bands whose sounds are (for me) more post-punk/dance-oriented than they are guitar/classic rock oriented (Talking Heads are one of the only bands that are BOTH in my opinion, and I also love them too much to leave them out of a stellar Triple-A lineup!)

Good list, Fan...and rarely, if ever, more than one song away from a hit. That's the way to do it.

^I agree, good list. I don't mind certain "classic rock" artists being played on AAA, please just not the standard crowd pleasers. Instead of America's "Sister Golden Hair", give us "Only in Your Heart", if you must. Or instead of the Eagles' "Hotel California", why not "Journey of the Sorcerer". One rule I'd have....absolutely no post 1980 Chicago. One of the reasons AAA became popular was many listeners were tired of the same stale songs (moreso than just the same artists).

Folks, when saying doing Triple A "right" you know that these stations must meet the "bottom line?" So, in the case of The Sound in LA, they think they've tried most of what their critics have suggested. They now know that to get a 3.0 share they must also be acceptable to a 30% Hispanic crossover...so we get a familiar-sounding, kinda hip JACK-FM with sensible music flow. And the station is "in the black" for the first time since Bonneville bought the thing!
