WHAT IS WITH 97.5 WPEN'S SIGNAL?

While in Eagle, PA on the turnpike 97.5 the fanatic came in 85% static. As I drove further west, some spots came in 100% static and 70% clear. Another time driving from Sicklerville PA to Ocean City, NJ, it came in bad and dissappeared.

WPEN-FMs signal is restricted to the west to keep it away from 97.3 WRVV/Harrisburg. If you're driving west from Eagle, you will (should) lose 97.5 quicker then the other class-B's in Philadelphia.

The 50,000-watt 97.3 WENJ/Millville crushes 97.5 as you head towards the shore (plus, 97.5s signal is directional, away from 97.3).

In Somers Point NJ, 94.1 WYSP came in just fine, and even better than 94.3 WIBG.

97.5 is nondirectional to the northeast, since the closest station is WALK in Long Island. I have heard it in Manhattan a few times when there are no pirates on the air at 97.5.

I wonder how much money that station makes airing its own mostly-syndicated ESPN Radio format. It might be in the interest of its owner and of Greater Media to make 97.3 a full 24/7 simulcast of 97.5 The Fanatic.

In other formats, hyper-local can be good. In others, you don't get much more "local" than the metropolitan area. The audiences of 97.5 and 97.3 root for the same pro teams. That's local enough.
