What is with NBC 10 on New Years Eve?

Why is NBC 10 broadcasting the stupid local fireworks show instead of the NBC network New Year's Eve With Carson Daly?
Wait, they are airing it, but only half of it and an hour later when it will be rather lame!
This kind of crap is why I wish I could get a whole other set of network affiliates, so when one pulls this kind of garbage, like ABC 6 did with football earlier this year, I can watch the real network program!
Is there some way to do this?
I heard of something called a "New York Antenna" - what is it?

Because this is Philadelphia, why would we care what some other place is doing?

I thought you lived in an area that can get WGAL, also. Your below post is about something on WGAL On Demand.

"New York Antenna" is just an antenna, marketed to viewers in NE Philly or up by Mercer Co., by some sat/antenna installers listed in the yellow pages phone book.

Some others may be atleast 40 miles away from Philly, and closer to WMGM 40 or WBAL 11, just like WGAL or WNBC.

But, this seems to be a 1-time pre-emption (even though its beind delayed) by WCAU. Maybe, the fireworks thing will be a really big event locally. WCAU should use their digital subchannel to air the Carson Daly show live.

There are some easier ways of getting WNBC by satellite (DirecTV, or Dish Net.) but requires changing your address, which may be not possible if you get DirecTV through Verizon(bundled for discount), etc.

Are any other NBC affiliates, besides WCAU, pre-empting(or delaying) it?

I think its a good idea for one of the locals to air a local New years eve event. Many markets do this.

As for 6abc, and therwe football, you will have this problem in every market (Well except ones with no football team) Espn games always get aired on the local ABC station, and all football teams sell there preseason game rights to a local station.

Get HD DirecTv. You get 2,4,5, & 7 from NYC. It is kind of good to have 2 stations for each network. Channel 10 should put the network programming on channel 10-2. That way, anyone with digital cable or over the air digital TV could watch it.

That is not true about ESPN games.
In New York there was a Giants (I think) game this season on ESPN and it aired on WPIX, which is definitely not the local ABC station!<P ID="signature">______________

I have no problem with local pre-emptions, that's a good case of the stations being in touch with their audience (knowing that nothing they do will please everyone, of course). But I agree completely with use of digital channels for the bumped shows, whether they're network or syndicated. There's no good reason, for example, that WPVI couldn't use that waste of a public affairs station (the one that used to have value when it ran Action News repeats) to house things like Millionaire or Jeopardy when they get pushed aside by bowl games.

As to the earlier references to WPVI's football carriage, at least the vast majority if not all of the network shows aired, and they heavily promoted the special schedules so people knew where to find them.

For the past couple of years, NBC10 has broadcasted live only the last 45 minutes of NBC's New Year's Eve programs due to the fact that they carry the local fireworks from Penn's Landing. They do, however, do a simulcast picture-in-picture of the live dropping of the ball in Times Square. That's the best you are going to get from this programming situation.

Well, i'm not sure the whole agreement with the NFL works. I know in most cases the ESPN game is aired on the local ABC station (I figured because ABC and espn are sister stations). I do know, espn games are always aired on a local channel, I guess so people without cable can watch. I believe ESPN is suppose to be blacked out in the 2 markets of the teams playing, but I never see comcast blackout espn when the eagles are on (but they sure are good at blacking out Phillies games on ESPN, when CSN is carrying the game.

So, without knowing, I would assume either the NFL and/or espn sells local righs to there games (BTW Both WB17, and UPN 57 have aired ESPN+ college foorbal games) the local abc channel has the rights, but can sell those right to another local station, if it doesn't want to preempt its normal programing, or a mix, with ABC O&O stations getting the rights, but allowed to sell, but markets with no ABC O&O station havning the rights up for grab.

All I know for sure is the team itself doesn't own the rights, since ch6 always shows the espn games, even when they aren't the offical station of the eagles/ ETN(the station the airs the pre-season games).

I thought DirecTV has now started to carry KYW-DT, WPVI-DT, WCAU-DT and WTXF-DT, and will no longer offer new Philly area subscribers the NY DTs.

I manly watch these stations for network programs.
I could care less about this local nonsense.
The networks should make a clean feed for those who wish not to be bothered with such nonsense.

I was rather pissed off when I tuned in for Desperate Houswives and found a football game I could care less about. I know several other people who were in the same boat. This ABC 6 "heavy promotion" was not heavy enough. There really needs to be some provision for normal network programming in this situation, as there are a great many people who don't care about football and other garbage nonsense.

First, the blackout is in effect in the home team's market only. Secondly, the ABC-ESPN relationship doesn't automatically mean the ABC station gets the simulcast. Case in point: during November sweeps, WJLA-TV Washington passed up a Sunday night game featuring the Redskins in order to run ABC primetime (or, specifically Desparate Housewives) AFTER they already agreed to carry the game earlier. The game ended up on WDCA-TV instead.

ESPN offers games locally to whomever wants it. I don't think that ABC-owned or affiliated stations automaically get first dibs. It's the same way with ESPN's coverage of the MLB division series.

I seriously doubt that ABC would allow WPVI, or any of their O&Os, do pre-empt primetime any time during the season other than now...

Im sorta surprised that they didn't break in <Insert BREAKING NEWS sounder here> about 11:58 PM because Doppler 10 gabazagazillion-million spotted a couple of snow flurries somewhere near Narbeth and got the weather guessers wondering if this could be the start of the "STORM OF THE CENTURY".

Did you ever think of calling NBC10? Would that be too damn obvious for you do do?

> I heard of something called a "New York Antenna" - what is it?

Did you ever think of of calling the people who sell them? Would that be too damn obvious for you do do?
