What is WLIP Playling these days?

Hi,
What is 1050 WLIP Playling these days?
When I left the area to move to Huntington Beach California There were playling standards. Are they still playling standards?
Or did they go back to oldies like when I first found them on the radio in the early 1990s?
And finally did they get a signal improvement for at night?

December 2003: flipped to ABC Memories from WW1 Standards. ABC Memories is a mix of Soft AC and Oldies. They ran WW1 Standards from 1996-2003 before that being Talk and Oldies and Oldies/AC.

4th of July weekend 2005: Did "The top 1050 songs of the rock & roll era" leading to local oldies music for the first few days or so after that. Now they carry ABC Oldies Radio. Station hasn't sounded better in a long time. They do local HS games play by play, have an hour of local news in the afternoon, and it just seems like they care more about the station then they used to.

Paul Kern left the station for WRJN/WEZY in 2005 not long after the flip to oldies. Bill Lawrence (who was at WLIP doing afternoons for a time, later went to WRJN/WEZY) is back on WLIP doing mornings.

Longtime host of Around The Town, Irene Buri-Nelson passed away in a tragic car accident a few weeks ago. Really sad.

Hope this helps.

They do syndicated '60s/'70s Oldies most of the time. But they have a great local Oldies program on Saturdays from 6:00 p.m. till midnight. Lots of '50s and local stuff. No signal improvement, tho.

Hi,
Thank you very much for the update on WLIP.
B.T.W. How can you all listen at night.
I was going through kenosha along the I-90 and even in the city of kenosha in was a very bad signal.
The oldies station what was good though was 1250 WEMP.

Must be your radio. I get it fine all over Kenosha, Racine and Lake Counties at night.

As for Milwaukee, its pretty good for a 250 watter in Milwaukee during the day. I was able to listen halfway to Madison. Never tried it at night.

I was also able to listen in downtown Chicago parked by the lake.

Terry Havel's rock and roll remembers show on Saturday evenings really rock the house if you are a hardcore oldies fan like me! He plays really obscure stuff from the 50s. However, the skywave really kills em' once the sun goes down up here. Otherwise, fairly listenable... not bad for a little one-lunger.

...actually, 1290 WLZZ was better than WEMP, but they gave up the ghost way too soon...

Hi,
I have never heard the oldies on that station. I only knew then as hits and oldies as WMCS.
(I hope you are talking about that 1290)
Or if not sorry for the confusion.

WLIP is doing local oldies music with Lou Rugani from 11-Noon now. 11-11:30 was Irene Buri-Nelson's shift which was left vacant by her untimely passing recently. 11:30-Noon was Sateline Spotlight with Tim Allen but it doesn't seem to be on anymore.

It seems pretty heavy on 50s and early 60s.

...1290 WLZZ was an oldies outfit in '80 and '81. I think by '82 they went country with Larry "The Legend" Johnson in mornings and bringing Jonathan Green back to town after his brief flirtation with Tampa. By that time WEMP took over the oldies format in Milwaukee...

I believe that Larry the Legend was on both the AM and FM. But, If I am remembering correctly, Jonathon Green was on FM and Tom Carr was on AM. I'm also not sure about the 1290 country thing. I could be wrong about this, but I remember 1290 as symocasting the 95.7 signal which would eventually become Z95. If someone has more info on 1290 and could shed more light on dates and such, I'd be interested. Thanks.

WZUU originally was simalcasting Larry The Legend in the mornings back then. When the calls changed to WLZZ they were doing the oldies format. First, they were a daytime only station and then upgraded to a 24 hour signal. Yes, WLZZ flipped to country music (Bernadette and American Pie were the last two songs played on the oldies format) and I don't know how long that format lasted. Don't know about the 95.7 simalcasting thing because WEMP had picked up the oldies format and that's where my ears were parked for a number of years. Sure do miss hearing John Gardner's voice on the radio.

Sure do miss having an oldies station here in Milwaukee.
