What is WPLJ?

I was reading the dentist's board and someone asked what WPLJ is and I thought I would answer that question here.

Actually the question should be what does WPLJ claim to be versus what they really are? They claim to be a Hot AC station and they have more or less stayed with that since Scott Shannon came back to New York and joined them in the early 90s.

I think in reality, they are "confused." They have been all over the road with what they play. You never know if you will get more 70s, less 70s, more currents, less currents, etc. in the rotation on 95.5 FM.

They also don't know what they want to be. They tell you what they are not about. Remember no rock, no rap and no sleepy elevator music?

If it's true that WPLJ which can be heard throughout the tri state area with a signal from the empire state building is going after adult women in the suburbs well all I can say is this business truly has become to fragmented and they are a very lost radio station as a result.

I just think they are competing with Jack, an all over the road format.

Whenever I visit NYC I make it a point to punch PLJ into my presets. I know that 102.7 and 101.1 don't have a clue. I know that there's an urban type station at about 5 or 6 places on the dial. There's always gonna be a boring public/talk/agenda type station somewhere on NYC FM. And then there's the soft/jazz/lame crap that seems so out of place whenever I hit the town THAT NEVER SLEEPS. PLJ keeps me awake!

In my rental it's 92.3, 107.5, 95.5(PLJ), 100.3 and 880/1010-AM. That's it NYC! PLJ plays tunes I know with jocks who actually entertain. It's a chore listening to your market.

Don't worry..I have the same problem punching pre-sets whenever I'm in L.A. too. Don't have that problem so much when in Seattle, Boston, Toronto, The Bay Area, Denver, Chicago..etc however.

The big two..can't build a stadium for the Jets/Olympics and no pro football in L.A. for years. It's getting boring when you post about the merits, or lack of, a longtime AC like PLJ. Why don't you do something about a station like WPLJ, which has a tried and true formula guarenteed to make money for ABC, even though they havn't had numbers in two decades. Start up your own station please and find a formula that can make me reach for the pre-set on my rental without making me puke on the dashboard.

New York radio caters to New York

You can puke all over the dashboard but you won't have lot's of company for 2 reasons, not many New Yorker's drive and New York radio is tailored to New Yorkers. The radio market does not cater to out of towners who occasionally travel to the city.
What's more, the smooth jazz station you refer to as lame is actually one of the most eclectic, hip and creative stations in the US. catering to the trendy New York market with it's current CHILL format. If you knew anything about the club/lounge scene in the city that never sleeps, you'd know that CHILL is anything but lame!

I'd agree that they are competitors of the brilliant, innovative, exciting new Jack, but of course PLJ kinda staked out its territory before Jack showed up. How much it has tweaked its nifty little formula in recent weeks, I'm not really sure since I am not a regular listener.

Enough sarcasm for one day. Apologies to all.

You tell me 92.3 has jocks that entertain but you failed to mention 104.3? 92.3..the station what was alternative and becomes rock yet the jocks still think they know all about the music...some of them young enough to barely be alive when the bands were around...heck they talk so much about how famous they are and entertainment that you wouldnt know the stations format...ha.. then there's 104.3 and Jim Kerr n company who REEK of NY radio experience. i would add one and delete another next trip around. :) Just my humble opinion.

WPLJ is actaully a Jack station with more currents and personalities. They play a few less songs but have far more personality than Jack FM. This is why CBS FM flipped...to be an alternative to WPLJ. Basically Jack FM 101.1 is WPLJ with a couple wierd songs thrown in and no p[ersonality.
