What is wrong with 55WKRC?

I agree that Dennis Miller's show is not very good. Love him or hate him Rush is still a force on the AM band. I understand some of the programming moves on the station but would prefer a local show in afternoon drive. I believe there is a real audience for it and I bet the local programmers in Cincy would love to do it but the big boys in Texas won't let them do it.

I do give high marks to the station for their week end shows. Ron, Gary and Marilyn do a real nice job.

I still believe Dennis Miller is the best thing on (AM) from noon to 2PM in Cincinnati. His is a completely different kind of talk show, humerous interviews with fellow comedians, mixed with political commentary.

Like so many, I find Rush's ego gets in the way far too often, and he is so predictable, and I am not interested in his cigar experiences or his latest golf game.

Drive time NPR programming makes me yell, "Get to the point. Who cares? Stop playing that wierd music between your freaking stories". NPR and PRI must be on at least a half a dozen signals in Southwest Ohio...Why?

Dennis is now over the 300 affiliate mark. He must be doing something right. How could so many talk radio PD's be wrong.

I know of another radio station owner in Cincinnati that considers it appointment radio.

Because there's an abundance of colleges with radio stations around these parts.

All I can think of is WVXU/WMUB and WYSO. WNKU only carries NPR news, no shows, and WCSU is jazz.

Pioneer: You have a point in the fact that Cincinnati is certainly a large enough market to attract a local afternoon show which might, in fact work.

What you're not either expressing, or realizing (I don't know which), is the fact that this is a tactic. CC doesn't want another station (let's say...Real Talk 1160) to walk away with a program such as Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh or whoever. Love them, or hate them, as you suggest...the syndicated guys get ratings....it's a proven fact. WLW is designed to be the "local" talk station in town, while 55KRC is designed to be the station that picks up all of the top syndicated talk talent which CC doesn't want to see show up on another station.

That's the fact of radio we live in today when stations are clustered, and not separate competitive entities.

Jason - your points are right on. It's another example of how the audience is on the losing end because C.C. really controls the Cincinnati AM radio dial.

Perhaps sometime down the road one of the FM's not doing well will try to crack C.C.'s talk block by turning to live local talk in the drive time slots..

We can kick 55WKRC's programming around like a soccer ball, but Jason Roberts signaled a cogent and definitive "time-out" in Reply #25... As Popeye used to say: "I am what I am, and that's all that I am", and corporate/market dynamics are going to maintain that status quo on 550AM. WKRC is [BY INTENTION] a "parking lot" for syndicated national talk programs with a PROVEN APPEAL... They just happen to have a good local morning show in Brian Thomas [that's my opinion only – your mileage may vary].

At 9AM, I make consistent use of preset #3 and keep my appointment with Laura Ingraham on 1160 [my favorite national talk program, and her new book on the tarnished state of our culture is a MUST READ]! I'm wondering if the "geniuses" at CC are regretting her replacement on 550 as Glen Beck continues to show a clear loss of his mental faculties. What follows in Dennis Miller is "OK" and offers an occasional respite to Willie [or whoever is tagged with the eventually-mounting fill-in duties]. I only wish that while on the radio, Miller was more to his truer form as displayed on stage or on his Fox News appearances. BTW, jry – NICE "kick" in the 1160 signal!

At 3PM on 550: Oh let me count the wishes that won't come true, and they DON'T include the man whose photo appears in the dictionary next to the definition of "minion" [Hanity—"The Wallbanger" as Savage so skillfully describes him]. I'd rather see "Nick from Loveland" get his big break in radio or listen to Shad O'Shea reminisce about his attempt to revive Fraternity Records, but that pesky ole "proven appeal" comes back to haunt us... 'I guess there's no accounting for the collective albeit "right wing" political taste... Thank goodness for Andy Furman on 1160!

Wow, thanks!
Some folks have commented that the signal is better since we did the ground system work. A lot of engineers will tell you
that a good ground system doesn't matter. I think that is because so many have decayed that we forgot how good it can be.
In the case of 1160, we were told that it never really had the proper radials in the ground. At any rate, we are going to try a
another thing or two before the snow flies.

I'll have to try getting 1160 again. Out here in southern Clermont County there's usually only 550 or 700 to choose from.

Near Batavia? They just had a Sunday remote there. Signal was great.
As far as the signal goes, a lot of people are going on what the station used to sound like or by what rumors the competition put out on the street. The previous owners gave up on the place and it needed attention and some TLC.
It is true that the night signal is a different story and something that is still being hammered out.

I too enjoy Laura Ingraham, but lately she seems more intent on hawking her "wares", than doing a talk show, plus she is prone to frequent absences to hawk he "wares" in person.

I also agree that Miller could kick it up a notch, but his show is unlike any other syndicated talker, and I like that.

We will pass it on..... Remember that these hosts will loaf a little during the summer.
