What Is Wrong With This Board?

Okay, beat me, berate me, starve me, make me write bad checks, but here goes; what in hell is wrong with this board? Some threads here get beyond a thousand views, yet responses are lucky to be in the dozens. Clearly, a lot of people are visiting here, why aren't you posting? I keep coming here, offering thoughts when applicable, but I'm about to go away. Is there something, anything, we can do to smoke out you radiophiles and get you to post? There is much to discuss here, no shortage of interesting threads, even a measure of controversy, yet about all we get is a big yawn. Any suggestions, any takers, any challengers, let's have it. For God's sake, radio people are some of the most egomaniacal, loudmouthed, opinionated individuals on the planet(me, too!). Where are you?

This is a message board (bulletin board). Messages posted are intended to be read by visitors. If they choose to post a reply, so much the better. If not, so what? If you are not happy posting here, by all means, don't post or go to another board. Don't cry in my beer.

Isn't the fact that you are sharing you thoughts and ideas enough? Do you need to be validated by responses to your posts? Seems like someone feels deficient!

There were lots more comments on this board before the switch over to this new system a few months back. I know I had a very hard time logging back in and finally had to change my user name to get back on as did sveral others. I think this might be one of the reasons the postings have gone down.

I'd say, warmland, that you're right, that the switch and subsequent headaches in logging on drove a lot of people away. It's actually a phenomena I've seen with more than a few other boards. Kind of an "out of sight, out of mind" thing.

I don't think there's much wrong with the board. Aside from the sign on problems, I think the opinions are getting on when there's an issuee. Here's my take, when I sold Talk Radio, I was told that only a small percentage of people called radio stations to express an opinion but that was no way indicative of the true membership or audience. So too I believe with this board. People might visit to see what we're all up to but don't necessarily jump in the pool.

Re: Why Aren't More Radiophiles Posting?

Yonkstur is on to something. I, too, am perplexed as to why more visitors don't post. There are any number of reasons why registered users come here in droves and don't add their opinions to the fire. I think Yonkstur explains why a great many people don't feel the need to express themselves. I've had numerous users write me to explain that they use our boards to research their own markets (or others of interest) and what's being said.

Masterg has made a wonderfully provocative statement that I'm glad has been expressed. His point is well taken. Radio-Info appeals to a wide cross-section of radio professionals and enthusiasts and their numbers are on the increase. I'd like to see more people weigh in on the various issues at hand.

Certainly the issues we encountered during the changeover could have deterred a number of users. However, as was pointed out by Warmland, one only had to re-register. We apologize for a sometimes less-than-smooth transition and any problems users might have encountered. As Warmland illustrated, our users are smart and able to overcome most obstacles.

However, multiple boards have come back like gangbusters and our overall use has increased.

Please continue the discussion. I look forward to reading more and more comments from users as to the reasons they post or don't post.

Thanks, MBE, for the support. I guess that is what puzzles me so; other boards are extremely active, why are we not? There are clearly a lot of radio-heads hereabouts who drop by this board daily, I'd love to see them post, I love the conversation, I love the memories.

Old radio rule-of-thumb used to hold that for every one person who'd call during a contest, there were 25 listeners who would not. We know you're out there, so please post...

I think the number of posters may also be down because of inappropriate comments and personal attacks made by other posters. I know for a fact that's why The Duke of Doo-Wop went away and will never come back He said so when it happened and he has stuck to it.

People are more likely to post when they disagree with an opinion or feel some "fact" is incorrect and needs to be "corrected." There are more people reading a thread than possible viewpoints. If someone has nothing to add, maybe it's better they add nothing. I'd hate to see threads cluttered up with a lot "Amen's" and "Right On's."

If the moderators feel the need to increase participation (in itself, not a bad thing), maybe one solution is to activate the Polling Feature included in the software used on this site. Users can post polls questions. And moderators, when it looks like a healthy range of opinions have been posted in an active thread, can start a poll and let people vote (which might trigger even more discussion).

I wouldn't disagree - take a look up top and see the ignorant response I got to the initial post on this thread. Me, I'm stickin' around, at least for now.

Yep. I posted a couple of times as "thebigone" giving what I thought to be the absolute inside story on a topic. For that I received personal attacks and harassing e-mails. So I too, like the Duke of Doo-Wop, do not participate. It is unfortunate, but, one bad apple does spoil the whole bunch. I continue to read posts to glean nuggets of market information.

Joe, thanks for taking the time to come back and post. If someone does make a personal attack, then by all means report it to the moderator.

I'm sorry that you've had a less than favorable experience on parts of our site. I always caution users in the amount of personal information they put in their profiles for the very behavior you've described. I need to point out that one bad apple doesn't have to spoil the whole bunch. Ignoring the poster will often ease your own stress levels and reporting TOS violations will eventually make things better. Replying to an obviously inflammatory post only stirs the pot.

I welcome users like you back to the fold. You've obviously got a lot of radio knowledge and experience to share. Radio-Info needs more enlightened users on these boards. We're not asking that the site become one big hugfest. We encourage people to share their opinions. We simply ask that users don't make their disputes personal in nature.

Welcome back, Joe.

You might recall putting me up at The Strathallen in Rochester one night many years ago, Joe. If you do, then you know my identity. If not, maybe it'll help to say the last we saw one another was at The Bloomsburg Fair. Welcome back, stick around, we can make things work. And many thanks to our MBE for gettting in on this.

Hey Joe, heard your ad looking for sales reps after your changeover there. Good luck with that. I particularly enjoy the AM station.

Hey Joe:

I remember you as Bobby Hatfiled at WBAX Super BAX for a very short time and also WAMS before that.

He did nights, right? Sandwiched between Jack Trippi and Bob Marinii with Vince Weber doing the overnights. Circa 1976? Summer of.............?
Am I close on that?
