What is wrong with WDDV?

I am really disappointed with Clear Channel's lackadasical treatment of WDDV (and quite possibily the 1450 simulcast). For several months, WDDV has been airing only one audio channel, and with the well-separated early stereo cuts that are in their format, the missing information is quite obvious. I've emailed everyone I could from their supposed website, even emailed someone from their license... No response and no action. And, I noticed today all their audio sounds overdriven.

AM has enough going against it without owner/operators adding to the problems with slipshod operation. If that's all they are going to do, they should just shut the darn thing off.

Sickening how radio has changed so much for the worse.

I will shoot an e-mail to the ops manager down there tomorrow for you. We operate seperately from them up here but I'll reach out and see if I can get an answer.

I'd be surprised if they find anything. CC's Sarasota cluster has had a "stereo" problem for years. I recall listening to the Morning Crew on WSRZ one day when listeners were talking about certain songs with a channel missing. It sounded like stereo but all of it wasn't there. I was hearing the same thing on my main tuner at home. Then, for some reason, I powered up a tuner in the dining room and eveything was there. The parts that were missing in the living room were audible in the dining room. I suspect someone is going to spend a lot of time trying to figure this out...if they ever really try.

The solution here is to sum the channels for mono. That has not been done. I see they have a stream... wonder how that sounds? (I can't check it at work)

A phase-chaser does similar.

In the 60s, the 45s were burnt with the mono version on one side and the stereo version on the other because of audio cancelling.

Most stations played the mono version because it was assumed that most people were listening in mono.

I would question if most of the younger people at the stations, now, are aware of it.

A phase chaser was a device used to correct out of phase carts, primarily.

I am 99% certain that they play their music off a NextGen computer hard drive and that the audio was not properly summed to mono out of the computer or out of their board. If I was closer, I'd go by there and fix it for them.

There must be an issue with the material coming out of Nexgen, I will have Ed take a look at it since I am using a Henry summing amplifier to combine L+R.

As far as being overdriven I was just listening to it and it seemed fine. Can you give me some more information on what your hearing and I will look into what is going bad.

And no one has tried to contact me about this all you have to do is call the front desk and Anita will patch you right thru to my cell.

And as far as WSRZ's audio issues I have been finding little barrier strips with resistor networks all over the building. None of which are documented or make sense. I will be replacing the on air feeds from the Audio Servers to the STL's when I replace the Audio PC's which is going to happen in short order. That should remedy any of those little "fixes" that have been applied over the years.

Doesn't look like I can contact you off the board. My email is phil at filbecaudiovideo dot com.

I do some of the imaging for WSRZ and it sounded really good recently.

Don't know about Dove. But a LOT of those songs had some vocals panned waaaaaay left or right. One channel gone..vocals gone.

Hey Hadyourphil - I hate hate hate hate Nextgen. Why these station groups invested in it always amazes me. It's crap. It's hard to work with and it always has one problem or another that takes a "propeller head" to solve it. The only thing it is good for is voice tracking and that's why they bought it. Idiots!

Have to revive this thread and thank Chris Williams of CC Sarasots for his diligent work to make WDDV sound 100% better! He found many technical issues and has corrected them all.

Now... if I could get them to tweak their music back more to what it was...

I was lounging on Gandy beach listening to 1320 last week. I decided to listen to 1320 instead of 1450 because the little bit of extra static made the music sound cooler. For a minute I felt as if I had drifted back in time. It was pretty cool.
