What is Your Idea?

We all know that there is nothing new in radio promotions....but if you had to come up with a promotion what would you do... what would you give away? I really liked the KRZ Burberry bag give away...that was a good one...

I know my ideas are not new...but...I would host an evening coffee break or dinner break...and give away coffee and doughnuts or late night dinners at 9 o'clock (like they give away lunch) but this would be for the people who work nightshift. I think the night shift is the most overlook time on radio...alot of people listen at work...on their computers...I know I do...
For Valentines Day I would do an "add a diamond contest"...four times a day a caller has a chance to win a gift certificate to a local jewel store by calling in...be the 10th caller..etc....then all the contestants names would be put in for an add a diamond necklace..the women would go wild..(at least I would).
I would also cash in on the Yankees coming to town...and give away team items...with the final prize being season tickets. Or how about Mohegan Sun...win a gambler spree....
What would you do? Or what did you do that was unique and at it time a big success.

Burberry promotion is a good idea. But a self serving promotion is really lame. For example- Randy Snedeker and friends camping out for a PS3 a week after the mad rush. It seems to me KRZ was simply looking for some cheap media attention. And who the hell is Randy Snedeker anyway? Being Joe's bro' is no claim to fame. Joe has to be the biggest [EDIT] in this market. Is Randy nothing more than a go-fer? If you can't impress me you bore me. I'm bored.

I think that hooking up with Mohegan sun is a great idea; the volume of people walking on and out of there is mind boggling, and they are all potential listeners. Coffee and donuts for the late or all night crowd there would get you some publicity!!

How about some positive suggstions???

Have you been to Mohegan Sun? The average age of a slots player has to be 70. Lots of people there, but very few in your target demographic.

I've never been a big fan of those "one major prize" contests. Make it easy to win, and give away a lot of moderately priced stuff. I've seen near riots over coffee mugs and WARM cookbooks.

A very astute observation, and a valid one at that. Plus, everyone within fifty miles is going to be looking for something for nothing from Mohegan Sun, and their first likely recipients will be charitable organizations, because they're looking to build a warm and fuzzy image here. Even charities may find it tough - Mohegan Sun seems to have built a tight relationship with United Way, so anyone asking for whatever may be told, "Go see United Way, we give big to them."

I can attest to that myself. Although the last WARM Cookbook was done probably as far back as 1983-84. You're right, the more people who win, the more friends you've made.

During my full time days in the wonderful business called radio I participated in two great promotions. On Ground Hog day my morning partner and I did our entire show from inside the Lackawanna Coal Mine at McDade Park. When we came out of the mine at 9 a.m. we saw our shadows.

We also did a neat Valentines Day promotion. The Gertrude Hawk store in South Side opened up at 6 a.m. (three hours earlier than normal). We did our entire show from the store and pitched it toward men (sorry guys) so that they could shop early in the morning and not get the tacky leftover Valentine candy hearts. We also gave away small hearts...three/four candies in each...as a way to track the customers. We gave away over 200 hearts between 6 and 9...and it snowed that day. I remember because I had to do cancellations and delays.

Hi...Here's another idea I was pondering: One of the local Radio Stations should do a turn back the Dial Week and have some of the famous voices from days gone by do radio shows...I think it would be great!

I also agree small promotions are wonderful....it gives alot of people a chance to win...and as you know...people will call in for anything just to win something....anything!

I like that Groundhog Day promotion....now that grabs attention!

I love it...but it has been done once, and tried at least one other time. WSGD, via Paul Cilliberto, pulled it off nicely about fifteen or more years ago, turned it into an enite weekend of Radio Greats. A few years later, John Hancock also tried it with former WARM jocks, but so many ex-WARMies had been fired, mistreated before leaving, etc., that they declined to participate. I think that's when Hancock realized coming to WARM had not been a great career move.

Ideally, if the budget exists, a big contest ..perhaps on going, builds cume. But a cutsey smaller prizes( Turkey and trimmings via a supermarket gift card for Thanksgiving, Party stuff for Superbowl weekend, back yard cookouts with a grill and all the stuff in Summer weekends) themed for season or holiday with lots of small winners builds Time spent listening.
And...ultimately cume plus TSL equals Average Quarter Hour. That's one of the science parts to this business that merges arts and science.
Of course, with the PPM comes new tricks, which have yet to be understood.
There was a time in the early 90's when research began to show that the one big prize concept began to show it's weak spots with listeners thinking they cannot win or it's a scam yet smaller more in number prizes seemed more of a reality.

Have you been to Mohegan Sun?

I wanted to see for myself, so wifey and I visited yesterday. Three observations...

1) The crowd is easily 75-80% seniors, not anyone's target audience.

2) Mohegan Sun doesn't need any help from any media outlet. Surely they want their media relations to be cordial, but they aren't in any need of promotion, nor will they ever be.

3) If Mohegan Sun does get with any stations on promotions, they'll do the picking and choosing. And most stations, I'd suggest, won't make the cut, they won't have a chance.

Some people were thinking that a casino here might be a tough sell here. Go see for yourself, if you can get in the door.

Radiogal-
That broadcast from the Coal mine on groundhog's day was a stroke of genius!!! Nice work.

I'll stop by Mohegan sun next time I'm in Plains. I'm sure Jimmy Hoffa (one of the original investors or Pocono Downs), is smiling someplace, where ever that might be.

Great thread. Some of the gamblers are close to being rabid; some of them will run two adjacent slots at one time. I also understand some of them wear depends so they don't have to leave the slots to go to the bathroom. Must be nice to have all that $$ to blow ;D
