Tucson What keeps KXKR on the air?

Three years ago on vacation in Tucson, I noticed that 101.1 KXKR was playing continuous music. No commercials, no DJs, just a top-of-hour ID. I figured this was some kind of temporary measure until the station settled on a more viable format.

Back in Tucson this week on another vacation, I’ve observed that KXKR is basically doing the same thing that it was doing three years ago. Still no commercials.

The music itself is fairly mainstream classic rock, though with not a lot of apparent thought put into music selection.

There’s a CP for the station to move to 101.3, but it’s still broadcasting at 101.1.

So…what keeps this station afloat? Where’s the money coming from?

Cochise aka Ted Tucker is pretty rich, at one time he lvied in Jackson, WY .. i think he was involved in oil and gas work.

He has bought or filed for permits, mvoed them sold them.... operates a few radio stations long term... and has been in trouble with the FCC numerous times for stations not being on or back when it mattered, having no studio, etc.

So, the desire to upgrade and sell.. hes had to sell/hand off a couple licenses.

An old New Times article about Ted Tucker said that some of these are hobby stations...to give him something he likes to listen to, while driving around Arizona on business.

This iis the New Times article that I'm thinking of, gives some insight into the Tucker stations...

Interesting story...thanks.

Right now (6:11 pm) it's started playing the Velvets' "Venus in Furs". That is certainly eclectic.

The Tascam is recording it, so I have proof.

Edit: followed by the Moody Blues' "Tuesday Afternoon". Somebody's looking at a calendar, I think.

Ted Tucker's Northern Arizona station is KZXK 98.9 Doney Park/Flagstaff. Central Arizona is STILL KCDX, which has been on the air like this for 25 years now.

And of course the shuffling around of his Tucson area signals. which I have lost track of, one may be at 103.7, another at 104.9.

Last i heard, he has homes in both Tucson and Jackson. Before radio, he worked as a Pharmacist in Globe, AZ.
He is a good dude.
