What make radio local?

What makes radio local? Is it our commercials? Our sales department thinks so, or is it our local news content, the remotes we do, or maybe our air talent? It's the total package, its not one think that makes radio local to a market. But, one think, satellite radio and Ipods can never touch is our local content and that is why local radio will always be number one.

No, it definitely is not the commercials. :D

Let's say you live in Neoga, IL. You're too far away from Terre Haute or Effingham to get "local" coverage. The air people won't talk about your local events, local news, or local sports. The sales team won't go out to Neoga to try to sell to the mini-mart.

WHQQ, however, will probably carry any parades live, talk about election results as the happen, etc.

Radio is local from several different ways.

1. Yes, your commercials do make you local.

2. Your news/info content.

3. Local Phoners (calls from listeners about local issues).

4. Weather, but that would fall under info category.

5. Air Talent talking about local issues, and just talking about life in your market.

with satellite driven stations its less on the air talent more on commercial content being localized.
