What makes a good jock, a good jock?

I've never DJ'd, so I don't know, but I know what I like when I listen. Still, I thought I'd canvass you guys one more time to learn what you think about "jocking". So here's my question---What does it take (in your opinion) to make a good jock, a good jock? I want to know if it's a marriage of technical skills, personality, relatability, intelligence, great pipes.....etc. And cite some local examples within your opinion and why they're good or consequently, not so good. Thanks

Timing, Delivery, Personality, and Execution. Great pipes are nice, but they don't make up for the four things I listed. The way you deliver it with the timing and personality is most important. When you open the mic, be tight. Know what you're going to say. Have a conversation with the mic. Be funny, but don't be overly stupid or lame. In execution, I mean technical issues. With most stations having everything in computers these days, it is easier, then when you had to deal with records, CD's, Reel-To-Reels, Cart machines, etc. There is no better feeling than executing a great air shift.

To me, that's what makes a great jock. If you're interested, go to http://www.reelradio.com and listen to some of Robert W. Morgan, The Real Don Steele, or some of the other airchecks on that site, and you will hear some great jocks. And, they had it all.
______________
The Bitterness of Poor Quality Lingers Long After The Sweetness of Low Price Is Long Forgotten.

I want somebody that oozes personality through my radio speakers.

Too often I hear lame jocks on a radio station and think, "sheesh, I could do that."

A good jock can make you love listening to him/her even when all he's allowed to do is read liner cards promoting station events.

Sam Malone was a great package on KRBE. He had tons of personality, his voice was born for radio and the composition of his show was addicting.

It's nice when jocks have signature bits, but they have to be meaningful and have some meat to them.

Just making a testicle or boob joke comes across as sophomoric, amateurish radio.

To do it the way Fletch once did on 101X in Austin or Atom Smasher did when he was doing nights, is when (BLEEP) goes down. It's the difference between compelling, edgy and raunchy radio and just plain low-life radio where the jock has to say penis to get the attention of his listeners.

Rod and Atom do that on their respective morning shows, but they can do a lot more than that.

Cousin Brucie of the fallen WCBS would be the flipside. Sure he had some really funny moments, but he injected his show with class, intelligence and purpose.

There are many different types of good jocks, but there's also a lot of bad ones who just sound like regular people talking on a microphone. zzzzZZZZZZZZ.

If the jock is good enough, probably 7 out of 10 listeners won't flip the very second he/she starts talking. Our instinct is to flip the station the moment music stops playing to find more music.
Dana Steele definitely had that quality in her KLOL years.

It's hard to create a defined, concise list of great jock character traits. They're different for each format and for each jock that tries to embody those traits.

I have been in 'professional' radio for only two years, though I feel that I can adequately answer what a good jock is...

1) Ability to make a joke out of mistakes and blunders

2) Convey a certain emotion to your audience (relatablilty)

3) Not talking about themselves ad nauseum. In the real world, people care about what affects them; not what affects you.
______________
If a DJ talks into a microphone, and no one's there to listen to him, does he make a noise?
