One thing that makes my job legitimately FUN is getting to pick the music to match the mood/flow of the day, the weather or some other tangible thing.
When I come into the studio in the morning, I lay out the country music for my 7 to 9am country music morning show and the 12 to 2pm classic hits/rock show, I look at what hasnt played in awhile, what people like and lay down some tunes.
But quite often, I will be sitting here on air and suddenly inspired by a random thought.. like just now at 740am, I was like "Man, its been pretty cloudy here, let me play a few upbeat songs with the word sun or sunshine in them!!
After I did our on air community bulletin board, I briefly mentioned "You know, its been pretty cloudy.. so I thought I'd brighten things up with a few songs about sun or with sun in the title. So I played "Sunrise, sunburn, sunset...repeat" by Luke Bryan, "Sunshine and Whiskey" by Frankie Ballard followed by "Sunny And 75" from Joe Nichols
This kinda stuff wouldn't work in alot of other places, if we let DJ's pick all the music today.. radio would be running amuck and be a disaster. In the day and age of ratings and alot of stations, we need to have defined formats.
What I do works because we are an NPR member station in, as one RadioDiscussusions.com poster puts it "Moose Knuckle Nowhere, Alaska"
