With the financial issues of Emmis, they had to shake up their big 2 clusters in NYC and LA. 1) WRXP being sold last year, 2) WRKS terminating its 30-year urban format tonight for ESPN sports (ironically the ONLY pure urban station Emmis owned) 3) KXOL is set to be sold soon.
There has also been talk that Emmis may let go of both of its flagship properties, which are set to be standalones. The conglomerate has brought the urban top 40 crossover to the limelight through POWER 106 and HOT 97, and made the format terminology "RHYTHMIC" official. Even so with KPWR and WQHT, Emmis set the standard for crossover to be a successful middle ground in markets with a heritage "urban contemporary" and a "top 40/CHR", and WBBM, KYLD or WPOW were the first outside LA and NYC to take the format on. Both Power and Hot have heritage rhythmic status as they were both on air for 25 years.
