After I posted that, I did a Wikipedia search on the Roth show.
I can't comment on the content- I never listened to it. But I do know that it was carried on seven stations and three of them have changed their formats since then. Roth significantly crippled every station it was on.
WDVE didn't drive K-Rock out of business. K-Rock self-destructed. The amazing thing is that some suit thought that what wasn't flying in Philly would fly in Pittsburgh and they gave us that Kidd Chris Show (or was it Chris Kidd?), which I listened to ONE TIME and realized I would never make that mistake again.
WDVE has never really had much competition, all things considered. WRRK basically was playing the same playlist- only wimpier (what in the world was "Piano Man" by Billy Joel doing on a rock station's playlist?).
I've said it to the point I now have a stalker, but . . .
WAIT!
WAIT!
I NEVER HAD A CHANCE TO LOVE YOU!
COULD MY PRAYERS FINALLY BE ANSWERED????????
I have just done my look at the WDVE playlist like I always do to complain about their songs being too old and slow, and
WHAT IS THIS????
I'm looking at their playlist, and for the first time in awhile- it's TOLERABLE!
In addition to Donnie Iris and Led Zeppelin, which by law all Pittsburgh rock stations are required to play, the other last four songs played, were Foghat's Slow Ride, The Cult's Fire Woman, BTO's Let It Ride, and Bon Jovi's Livin On a Prayer!
REAL ROCK SONGS! SONGS THAT MAKE YOU MOVE! SONGS THAT PUMP THE BLOOD! SONGS THAT MAKE THE LOCAL FUNDAMENTALIST PREACHER BELIEVE YOU'RE WORSHIPING SATAN!
REAL SONGS! GOD LOVE 'EM, REAL SONGS!
Now, I will say if you go down this list a bit more there is Phil Collins on there. And Phil Collins has no business being on a rock station.
But even so, dude, WDVE IS- BY AND LARGE- PLAYING A SET OF SONGS THAT ROCK!
I haven't been this excited since Heather Locklear was on the cover of Cosmopolitan!
