What Playing In Your CD Player? (Smooth Jazz Wise)

I thought this thread could be about what you are currently listening to smooth jazz wise in your cd player or mp3 player (etc.) We might be listening to some recently that others might haven't heard of yet, this is just a way of helping others discover new artists, songs, and albums.

I don't have that much of a collection, (mainly due to money and hard to find in my area) but I have a few of them.

Mindi Abair - Come As Your Are, Life Less Ordinary, Stars
George Benson & Al Jarreau - Givin' It Up
Candy Dulfer - For the Love of You
Euge Groove - Born to Groove
In the Pocket featuring Mark Baldwin
Boney James- Shine
Sade - Best of
White, Braun, and Abair - White Christmas

Smooth Jazz Samplers
KSSJ Samplers 2006 and 2007
KYOT Sampler Volume 13
Smooth Jazz V 98.7 Nine and Ten

I got In The Pocket in a dollar tree about ten years ago. I bet I have played that cd a million. It was the first c-jazz/smooth jazz cd I owned and made aware and wanted more of jazz. I would recommend that cd to one to anyone. That one is currently what I'm playing.

FYI - If this is a bad idea for a thread, just let drop. ;D

I think it's a great idea for a thread

Mostly AdultAlt Instrumentalists who have busted out of the smooth jazz box.
Ken Navarro "Dreaming of Trains" and "Grace of Summer Light"
Steve Oliver's stunning "Global Kiss" which goes another step toward establishing him as a gifted singer/songwriter as well as instrumentalist. There are 3 vocals on this CD and they are the kind of vocals we could use more of - voice to match his chops and such insightful and original lyrics. (the "single" is of course the most smooth and least interesting song on the CD..it's better than 90% of what's out there but the rest of them are better)
Chris Standring "Blue Bolero" yeah, it grew on me kinda the way "Secret Story" took a while and when I interviewed him (SV next month)
sure enough he said that was one of his all time fave CDs
Basia - It's That Girl Again she's coming to Jax in may. Oops, wasn't supposed to reveal that yet ;)
Andy Snitzer - Some Quite Place (mega underrated!)
Nelson Rangell - Yes Then Yes still sounds amazing
Early David Sanborn-Marcus Miller collaborations (Run For Cover, etc)
A vocal compilation I did for a friend that is all songs radio should not have overlooked - mostly real NAC music from the last 10 years.

Thank you. Wow, you two have given me some great choices, I will have to check out Steve Oliver's Global Kiss, Basia's new cd which I have enjoyed listening to her and Ken Navarro, who stations need to play more of. Thanks for the suggestions AnotherCat and Nock. ;D

Honestly would not know the formula if it hit me in the face. Maybe I have my own formula :) I like it and it usually garners a few calls when I hit it. Been on 4 tracks so far.

Cool thread! Been a listener of smooth jazz since I was a kid, among other genres.

I have on iPod Nano (Including smooth jazz and smooth jazz-ish songs that had airplay and some new age ones and some AC) so far:
3rd Force-In The Full Moonlight (Loveee it!)
Basia-Miles Away
Breathe- Hands to Heaven (I read this was a half smooth jazz, half pop band from back in the day, so does this count lol)
Brenda Russell-Piano In The Dark
Dave Koz-Castle of Dreams (One of my all-time favorites, among other Dave Koz songs)
David A. Stewart/Candy Dulfer-Lily Was Here
David Benoit:
Every Step of the Way
I Just Can't Stop Loving You (A Michael Jackson joint)
Cast Your Fate To The Wind (A Vince Guaraldi joint)
Some Other Sunset
David Foster-St. Elmo's Fire Love Theme
David Sanborn-Chicago Song, You Are Everything
Des'ree- You Gotta Be
Down To The Bone-Long Way From Brooklyn
Double-The Captain of Her Heart
Enya-Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)
Everything But The Girl-Missing
Jan Hammer-Crockett's Theme
Jim Brickman-Angel Eyes, If You Believe
The John Tesh Project album "Sax on the Beach" (I totally want "Broken Wings" by them :D)
Kenny G-Sentimental, Going Home, Songbird, Champagne (He has good songs!)
Kevin Toney-Kings
Lionel Richie-Do It To Me One More Time (I have more of his, just that this particular one is smooth jazz-ish)
Luther Vandross-Hello (Lionel Richie joint), Love The One You're With
Marc Antoine-Sunland, Unity, Latin Quarters
Michael Jackson Human Nature(Love this song! There's the cool Miles Davis version, sadly I do not have it), You Are Not Alone
Norah Jones-Sunrise (A favorite!)
P-1-Groove
Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald-On My Own
Phil Collins-Everyday, Do You Remember, Hold On My Heart, In Too Deep, Another Day In Paradise, etc.
Quintana and Speer-The Way I Feel (One of the classics!)
Randy Crawford-Give Me The Night (George Benson joint; one of my favorites-a very good CHILL version of it)
Richard Elliot-Because I Love You (I have so many favorites of his)
Robin Thicke-Lost Without You
Stevie Wonder-Part-Time Lover (Awesome song!)
Seal-Crazy (Also love "Kiss From A Rose")
Sting-Fields of Gold
Tina Turner (Mostly her "Simply The Best" album, but What's Love Got To Do With It? and Don't Wanna Fight had airplay on the old WNUA in my area)
Yanni (Lots of Yanni :D)

That's my list so far. Sorry for it being long. :-[

Nock,
which songs?

I am pretty sure Nock is one the same tracks I am on, plus or minus one or two. I think I have heard Nock spin "Dance on the Water" as well:

"Bail Out"
"Blue Funk"
"So Retro"
"Coral Dream"
"Parlophone"

Any way you stack it up, I think this is far from "formula." JMO, but I think it has great vibe. Terje and Chris Standring's CDs are two of the best CDs to come out recently. Of the ones that have not been mentioned, I think Gregorie Howard's self-titled release is also a pleasant surprise.

I gotta put on my Randy Jackson face and say I thought G. Howards was "just OK." I think I'm just backing off from the traditional smooth jazz sound and looking for stuff that doesn't have any of the "bells and whistles" : that shuffle sound, the "ba-da-da-dada" thing, the little synth signature that is on all the Paul Brown songs and imitiations, etc. Probably overreacting a tad too.

Will say this. Nothing on the Jonathan Butler CD excited me. It is all Urban A/C vocals except for 3 radio-formula instrumentals. One sounds like a song he recorded a few albums ago and just really slowed it down. Don't know if we really need a cover of "I Can See Clearly Now" either but for stations like the WAVE and WSJT this is the one that may get him play

I thought Randy Jackson's thing was "It's ah'ite." ;) Not that I would know. I only watch the show because my wife likes it, and I feel like "hanging out" with her. ;D

I probably like GH because it IS a Paul Brown production. As we have said time and time again, different strokes for different folks, I guess. I think Paul Brown's projects are very tight, and he is an absolute perfectionist in the studio, to the point that it probably drives some artists crazy. I recall Jessy J talking about it in jest on Blake Aaron's show. She hinted that Paul can be challenging to work with, but respected the fact that he was such a perfectionist in the studio.

I thought JB's single was "ah'ight," if not decent. But I have yet to sample the entire CD as of yet. Would be disappointed if that were the case, but would not be surprised either.

Nock..I'm with you. I really, really, like Vattimo's CD. So much that I bumped G. Howard off our feature album slot for next week and put him in. His music tosses this thread directly back to pre-Mintzer Yellowjackets to me.

Thing is I almost tossed this one onto the thrift store pile because the press release had 'sit back and relax" in it so I though it was going to be smarmy makeout music or sonic wallpaper..then I was doing housework Saturday night and just started going through a pile of new CDs and, well, WOW!

Yeah I almost missed this one because I thought they shipped 2 singles the way it came. One single and then the full did not have a cover and looked like another single until i flipped it over. Interesting stuff.

Nock
