What qualifies as classic alternative?

But then stations like KFRR are still reporting as alternative, so songs from bands like Nickelback and Metallica keep making their way on the alternative chart. By my judgement, they could cut about 10 or 12 stations from their current reporting panels that really should be reporting as active rock stations, and then add in several stations that should be reporting as alternative stations, but right now are second tier stations that are not "official" reporting stations. IMO, the Mediabase alternative panel is slightly better than the BDS alternative panel, but not by much.

I seem to recall that some of the early alternative stations (91X, KROQ) occasionally included some Beatles and Rolling Stones tracks in their regular rotation. Kind of a nice nod to the roots of alt rock. Wouldn't happen these days, that's for sure.
