I agree--good station in the late 70s and early 80s.
Anybody remember WGLD in Oak Park 102.7 when they tried oldies in the early 70s? Art Roberts worked there.

Another station I would like to see comeback would be AM 1570 WBEE in Harvey, from a few years back. At that time
they were "classy blues and jazz", from 5 AM to 9 PM, and brokered religious programming at night. They played
everything from Miles Davis to Frank Sinatra. They had very few commercial's(which unfortunately is the reason
the station was sold), just long set's of music with host's that really loved the music they were playing. They were
not afraid to play a song that was 12 or 13 minutes long. It was run out of building the size of a garage at 157th
and Campbell on the border of Harvey and Markham. They still transmit from there, but have moved the studio
to somewhere on the southside of Chicago. They run all religious programming and Gospel music now.

Another station that came to mind was WEDC AM 1240, which was on the air from Midnight to 5 AM, prior to
being absorbed by WSBC. There was a man who for a few years that bought all 5 hours M-F. He brought in all his
own records and CD's, and played them commercial free all night. I cannot recall his name now. He always
started his show with the song Night Shift by the Commodores, and would take requests, and play it if he had
the song. I heard a lot of great Otis Redding songs while he was on the air ;D.

Sure.....when the damned thing wasn't brokered. And in glorious MONO, no less!
Cyberdad, Wasn't WVVX one of the last FM's in our area to convert to stereo? I know WBEZ used
to run during the day in mono for the talk programming, and switch to stereo at night for the jazz. I don't
think VVX was equipped to run in stereo until they were bought out by Big City Radio.

Yes they were in mono, but they gave us good oldies at a time when there was no other alternative for that music. Around 1979-80 I was living in the city and used to listen to WVVX often. By that time WFYR had gone AC and VVX was the only oldies alternative. The records were scratchy so it's probably good that they were in mono.

+1. As far as I know they were the last area "holdout" in mono, although I seem to recall that WOJO broadcast only in mono for quite a while. Then, of course, you had/have all those CBC mono FMs in Canada.

95.5 WMET and WRXR
103.1 BOTH as the 80s channel but also when it did Jammin Oldies before 103.5 stole that format away.
103.5 WFYR when they were oldies in the 80s

I heard an old aircheck of Dick Kemp from WIXZ in Pittsburgh/McKeesport. Was he the loudest motormouth ever? What was the biggest station that he was ever on? WIXZ had real coverage issues and I presume that Chicago station was not a level with WLS or WCFL?

Kemp was on in Cleveland for awhile, but I'm not sure what station.

One night several years back when he was on WJMK, Dick Biondi asked the trivia question, "Who was the 'Wild Child' ". Not a single listener got it right.
