I grew up in Milton, Florida and worked at WEBY 1330 (or at the time it was “Stereo 1330 WEBY.”) This was my first job at 16 and I would do the afternoon shift, after high school each week day. Playing ABC News at the top of the hour and Paul Harvey. I have to thank Chip Maples for giving me that opportunity. He was the son of Byrd Maples (the flying Mayor).
WEBY was ahead of its time - with the technology and production studio in the late 1980s. This was also the time when AM Stereo had two competing formats (C-Quam vs Kahn). WEBY was a 5 kilowatt powered station during the day and then I remember having to drop the wattage to around 100 watts — which did not travel very far.
With the right receiver the audio quality and stereo separation was incredible - but we know the “Rest of the Story” with that - lol.
Ahh such fond memories I had and having a community station was so cherished.
Thank you for this old post. It made me tear up - happy tears.
