What Really Matters in Seattle

I am a bit miffed about posts by LA cowboys (marrvvv-LA) and portland cowgirls (maaamaaaa) and a herd of out of market people telling us what is going on here. For those who actually work in this market we have heard enough about MOOVVVINNN. The station had its best book last summer and really has never gotten back to that launch number. We have heard enough about the "big flip" of KPLZ. They are stealin some country and pop and trying to be relavent again. The "reinvention of HOT/AC" is more like Contemporary JACK. (and we know how well JACK is doing here and around the country..bye bye) dumb move for KPLZ. KBSG and KBKS are just over. They lost their core and it ain't comin back no more. (poetry!!!!)

SOoooo lets focus a few posts on stations that are kickin A. KZOK owns the market now, who will attack em and how? KKWF has beaten KMPS, how long will the PD and airstaff last? WARM is ripe for the pickin from a fresh soft ac.
Let's talk about what matters. I say KBKS goes right after KUBE. JACK goes right inbetween KZOK and KISW while KBSG goes soft and Right after WARM. KPLZ will wait to see if their new "format" flies and MOVIN has about another year. THOUGHTS?>

Jack

Jack is actually doing fine in Minneapolis. Kool steered to a similar format several months ago, but despite Kool's full airstaff, the Jack computer is winning.

And considering the crappy signal licensed to Wyoming, the Jack in Denver is doing OK.

As for KPLZ, they're not doing anything different than the normal AC formatics. Dumb move? Works all over the country.

Oh, and their billing kicks ass.

Wow, another scintillating and introspective thread on this board. Uh-huh.

As for me - who works in the market - I welcome the out-of-towners to post here. At least what they post is more thought out than most of the drivel on this board!

I agree 100%. I travel much of the time and though I consider Seattle home, I will post comments on other boards. I find it interesting to get an out of town perspective.

I also agree that posts on KQMV, KPLZ, KBSG are interesting because the stations are adjusting or trying something new. Will it work, time will tell. The MOVIN format has not performed well, in fact Seattle is probably the market where it works the best due to a lack of urban AC competition here. JACK works in a couple of major markets, but most of the success has been in Canada or in markets under the top 50. Seattle's version leans 60-70% male, but is well behind KZOK, KISW and the Country stations.

KBSG and KPLZ are both trying to redefine formats that have experienced ratings declines, but still have strong billing. My bet is they are trying to do this before billing begins to decline. I find KPLZ's addition of Country and CHR not to my taste, but my wife seems to like it okay. I actually enjoy KBSG a bit more, but could do without some of the disco cuts.

KQMV was a format flip, KPLZ and KBSG are just adjustments in my view. Whether they will do better or have to pull back remains to be seen over a four book. Mamma and Marv keep posting on this and other boards. A variety of opinions makes for a more interesting discussion.

Nice 4TH post there Lisa (aka Mamma)! I am too getting sick of your input on Seattle which ends up being about how GREEEEEEEEEAT Movin' is. Everything you hear about this market is probably coming from your friends over at Sandusky, so it's all hear-say and biased.

I love to hear what others think about Seattle. I wish that more would put their 2 cents in. Just remember that the only wrong opinion is the one that was not stated.

I think that it will be interesting to see how KPLZ will execute this change. It is an interesting concept, although I do not know how their current audience will enjoy hearing Akon next to Carrie Underwood. I think that it is a great idea, wish I was smart enough to think of it myself. The thing that I worry about is the overall age of the personalities on there. I don’t think that they can really connect with their target audience. But who knows. At least it will be interesting to see what they do over the next couple of years.

I have mixed feelings about KQMV. I enjoy the station a lot, but I don’t think that currently it has what it takes to really do a lot of damage to KUBE. I think if they have a shot at it, they brought in the right guy to run the place. (I already know what you all are going to say, and I don’t think that “King Marc” really runs that station. I think that he is in the loop on what is going on, but he leaves his programmers to do what he hired them to do, actually program.) Looking at the Mediabase reports, I think that something has happened that has made KUBE react. They use to be one of the most current CHR’s in the country, and from what I saw this week, they are now one of the least current CHR’s in the country and they are playing Recurrents that they didn’t even touch when they were new. I think that this will be interesting to see over the next year.

KBKS has a great concept for what they are doing………..just poor execution on all parts.

I think that it would be in KRWM’s best interest to have a direct competitor in the market. I think that they have a solid lineup with an even more solid staff behind the scenes that is ready to have that kind of challenge in the market.

KKWF and KMPS will be around for a long time. I think that this is the kind of thing that we will see for years out of these 2. People like KKWF because it is new, a different approach to what they already love. I totally agree, if I can get what I love but better, they yeah….that’s a no brainer. What KMPS needs to do is either 1) nothing. People will eventually get sick of gimmicks and the “new car smell” and want to hear what they have always loved. Or 2) think of an original idea to make them have that “new car smell” again. Either way I am confident that this rivalry will be around for years. Nobody is even close to being dead yet.

Unless you are talking about KJAQ, then that is a whole ‘nother story.

I wish that I could chime in on the rock stations, but I just don’t follow them enough to really feel that I can say anything about them.

I welcome all challenges! Please feel free to rip this post apart. New and different ideas is what makes me love my decision to go into radio every single day. ;D ;D ;D
