What should ESPN 1250 do?

Although I did not agree with the firing of Mark Madden, it's been done and its time to move forward. Pretend that you have the hiring/firing decisions there. What would you do? These are my ideas: While we are in the firing mode, Please fire Chris Mack. I have heard him say offensive things in the past. More than that though, the guy just doesn't have it. The next insightful sports comment he makes will be his first. His "frat-boy" attitude is annoying. I have a career move for him. He would fit in perfectly with the morning show at DVE. There, he would fit in quite nicely. he would be surrounded by other people who, like himself think they are funnier than they actually are.
If you want to add some class to the station, please hire Stan Savran. The pairing with Guy Junker is the obvious move with the Crowe flying to the 3:00 P.M. shift. However, another option would be to have Stan replace the Mile Tirico fiasco. Tirico obviously wants to be everyone's friend so he he refuses to say anything controversial. In short, he is a total bore. This would also fit into Stan's T.V schedule.
I know, I know Stan's too old, he doesn't get ratings and he relates to the wrong demographics. I would suggest that working for Fox 970 was not the best situation for him. The station is irrelevant and poorly run. Stan would add class and dignity to the station. In addition to his obvious wealth of sports knowledge.
I would keep everyone else. Ken Laird, Jim Colony, Joe Starkey, etc. are all good at what they do and could be interspersed in the mix as needed.

I thought Stan's show on 970 was great but there was not enough around him to make the station a success. His numbers there were better than anything 970 has had before or since. Yes, he draws older demos (but I've always thought that was sort of a sales pipedream in sports radio... they want to sell the 18-34 demo, but it's mostly guys over 40 listening no matter who is on the air).

Smizik noted that Stan couldn't do PM drive because of his TV duties at FSN. He did his 970 show from FSN's studios, it's not very hard to do shows from wherever the host happens to be.

In short, I think Stan is on a totally different level from everyone else in the market and would be the best choice. And I still think that plan B is the Junker & Crowe show moves to Madden's slot and they clear Colin Cowherd from ESPN 10A-1P.

Putting Stan & Guy Together would be great! Two things: Eddy & Guy have built an audience over the past few years and their numbers aren't bad for an AM sports talk station, would you take a chance in breaking them up two pair Stan & Guy together again? As for Stan would Fox sports allow him to do a show on an ESPN station? In my opinion I think Stan & Guy would be great for for the "BIG 1250" Eddy has alot of talent and for him to do afternoon's after some time it could work out for them, he's got attiude and he wont be hung up on just one sport like Madden was. Eddy's no dummy he can carry a show on his own just like he did when Paulson was on vacation at DVE. As for Stan being to old, BS. Stan knows what he's talking about and I think Clear Channel made a huge mistake letting him go, his show was good and he was on top of things, the problem was he had a lousy signal at the old double double (Fox sports 970) and had no promotion by management, plus he had Madden to on the air at the same time. As for Guy, he's good on both Tv and Radio.

Stan already works for 1250, so I can't see FSN having an issue. Beside, I think FSN TV and Fox Sports Radio are two separate entities.

But with our luck we'll get somebody like Rocco Pendola again.

Give Scott Paulsen another shot at a "Sports" Talk Show

If you can convince him to take time away from his column at the Observer-Reporter.

10-1 Stan & Guy
3-7 Scott & Eddie

First choice should be Stan, hands down. The Paulsen idea is also a good one, but it would be plan B for me. Nobody knows, or handles sports talk better than Stan.

I think they're headed towards Savran being the answer. He did a "special edition" today from 2-4 and wiill be on again tomorrow 3-5PM from the live all-day pregame show. He alluded to hoping that he'll be doing it "many more times..."

If nothing else, using Savran now buys them time and gives them a chance to develop a more long-term plan. This is a slow time for 1250 anyway. They have to be rolling with the new show by September.

All of this is still dependent on Bristol. They are still hopping mad at the way the whole Madden situation was handled and just might show someone else the door before all of this settles down.

I would advise E to sit down and talk with Jack Bogut before making such a decision

Ellis has a non-compete. Can't see ESPN writing a check big enough to make that go away.

Bogut analogy doesn't fly. Last time I saw him, the guy who "failed" on Ardmore Boulevard was still a radio legend a well respected gentleman in his community and driving a car worth almost as much as my house. We should all fail that badly.

The answer to fill Madden's spot is some sort of ensemble which could eventually develop into a two-person show. Launch it now and they'll have several months to evaluate things and have it ready to go in time for September.

I think they're headed in that direction with what they did at the Cup finals... a team effort from Chris Mack, Ken Laird, Joe Starkey and Stan Savran....

Hope Stan's 60 something back is up to carrying the load. There isn't much in that lineup to move the needle on the talent meter very far to the right.

They are going to throw a lot of low cost ideas against the wall and see what sticks. There isn't a ton of money over there anymore and unless Bristol forces them to take national programming in that time slot they are just going to have to make due for now.

The 4PM national show featuring former Bucco Orestes Destrade is very weak. The stuff they have been doing the last couple of weeks is better, if only because it's local.

Especially in this market local sports is always better. Its a question of what can you afford and what can you sell.
