What Should They Do?

Getting closer to 2012, what should they do?

95.5/94.1/107.1: 95.5 can go into SE Ohio so it makes sense for why they would keep it, but I don't understand the translator or WINK especially when 95.5 transitioned to playing more current stuff. I miss when 107.1 was WAZU, I think they could throw a rimshot Rhythmic on there and do better than WINK.

JACK FM: Worth keeping it?

Rewind: Leave it alone, break up the translators, or flip it?

103.9 WMNI: Since they already have Talk on there, is it better to just leave it alone and hope it grows like The Fan did?

X1067: Alternative, Active Rock, or something new? I miss Gen X.

On 103.9 WMNI: I think they are waiting to see if the FCC will grant or dismiss them their application
to upgrade their signal before a format change(f any) is considered.

ON X1067: Alternative Rock is a good format for their new tower site near The Ohio State University.
If they do change formats on 106.7, I believe it will go to news-talk WTVN-FM but as they say, if it ain't broke don't fix. X1067 appears to doing just fine as is. No?

103.9 WMNI: They will keep it talk because they will want to see how the news format does on their new stick. Thay just received a CP grant to move
the stick a couple of days(see other WNCI-FM thread) ago.

WTVN 610 should then want go with WTVN-FM if this is correct.

I still don't see Clear Channel Columbus moving WTVN to FM unless WMNI-FM sees some serious gain. [They are still making way to much money with the way the signals are now].. I actually see NABCO going with a different format on 103.9 with a better signal.. even though they are running news radio 103.9/920 on the cheap.

Are you suggesting that their plan all along may have been to do news on 103.9 only until the upgrade? Why would they bother, since the old format was probably even cheaper to run? In fact, I'm surprised NABCO didn't stick with 103.9's original format awhile longer just to get a cleaner read on how much the signal upgrade adds.

I doubt Clear Channel would buy 98.9 back since they had to sell it to buy WNCI, WCOL, and WYTS back in 98 under the Jacor name.

There were strong rumors of an imminent sale for 98.9 back when it first switched from Urban AC in September 2011.  That sounded feasible given the flip to Adult Hits, but no sale materialized.  But if there is indeed a possible sale in the offing at this point, Saga would seem like a likely buyer.  It would be a step up for their current cluster, and they recently said they were starting to look at possible acquisitions.

As for CC, if they think 98.9 is a better signal than any other FM they have, they could try to offload one of those to buy it.  But with the upgrade of 106.7, that station may have an equal or better signal than 98.9, anyway.

I was told it was not Saga so knowing that Salem was desperate to get an FM companion for WRFD AM, Salem was my #1 guess.

CC Columbus is over the limit as they say.

My guess this may me on the air with an LMA in place by the end of the year, if not a few weeks time.

It sucks that it's Salem. We already have enough Christian programming in Columbus. I should have known better than to get my hopes up.

They take over on Nov 1st.

The Fish?
The Word?
Faith Talk?
News/Talk?
Business?

Other than spanish language stuff that's about all they do... what a bummer.

In retrospect it's too bad (1) that if there really was a possible sale of 98.9 in the offing a year ago that it fell though, and (2) that Salem's purchase of 102.5 earlier this year fell through (unless you're a fan of WWCD -- I'm not).  Oh well, I guess the alternative would have been more country.  With just a few exceptions, this market remains pathetic.

How much do you want to bet if they go News/Talk then Jack ends up on 103.9?

That would make some sense because they could attract back some former 103.9 listeners as well.  But if they did that my guess is that they would instead go to a satellite version.

BTW, while I don't expect it to happen here, it's interesting that CC is doing Jack-FM in a few markets, and other (very successful) Adult Hits stations such as the Lake in Cleveland.  98.9's problem with that format is that its signal has some major holes in suburban an ring-county areas that could be core to an Adult-Hits format.  That could cause some problems for whatever Salem has in mind, too.  Its coverage area made urban-shaded formats especially suitable for 98.9.
