What should Turner do with HLN?

What should Turner do with HLN? It seems a kind of pointless channel and doesn't really have a focus and Turner don't seems to know what to do with it. It seems to be focusing a lot more on true crime recently. Forensic Files seems to take up much of its schedule 'As of April 2016, the program took up about 58% of the channel's weekly schedule.[50] In March 2017, HLN executive Ken Jautz stated that the network was making an effort to produce more original series; some of the new series that were slated to premiere in 2017, including Beyond Reasonable Doubt, Something's Killing Me, Inside Secret Places with Chris Cuomo, and the second season of How it Really Happened (whose first season premiered January 27, 2017), were designed to compliment the popularity of Forensic Files and other true crime programs, as well as HLN's renewed focus on crime coverage as part of its news programming.' (Wikipedia). Should Turner scrap proper news on it convert it into a full time true crime channel to take on the likes of C&I, ID and the new Oxygen channel that is now focusing solely on true crime? It seems to be heading in this direction. It needs to have a proper focus.

It was originally the 'short form' version of CNN. CNN Headline News.
It seems like they've found that it's too expensive to staff the channel around the clock ... just cheaper to air reruns of the crap cop shows.

Except they now have original programming on most of daytime, (the exception of "Forensic Files" for 2 hours middays). Recently added was SE Cupp at 4pm Pacific. It seems to be a CNN-lite type of product with some CNN commentators pulling double panel duty.

Also HLN is taking programming from the old CourtTV/ Currently TruTV with court programming. I say HLN is OK for now they can't flip to politics because then they end up cannibalizing CNN. Also HLN cannot go back to the original format because then they will have to figure out how to compete against CBSN.

HLN just expanded their live programming. It's now live 6AM-5PM Monday-Friday. And then it's live again 8PM-9PM Monday-Thursday.

You mean 7-9pm Monday-Thursday with S.E. Cupp's new show too.

I think they should revert to the format that it had from 1981-2001. Straight news in 30 minute blocks.

Ahh I miss the days when HLN was like 1010 WINS or WCBS 880 with pictures but thats not coming back anymore to HLN. HLN would have to compete against Newsy ( All News for E.w. Scripps) and CBSN to get that type of audience. Also HLN would have to explain how they are not cannibalizing CNN if they did that again to a new audience.

I say HLN should stay where they are at this point. HLN already took programming ideas from the Old CourtTV (Now TruTV for Crime programming)

Also TruTV became more of a reality TV Network for Time Warner at this point.

Better Solution HLN should be COurtTV!

HLN cannot be its old format because its a crowded field for Straight news in 30 minute blocks. Yes CBSN and Newsy has taken that spot for US national News. But also Al-Jazeera and BBC News has taken that void for International news stories.

If the original CourtTV formula (gavel-to-gavel trial coverage) couldn't hack it with viewers and advertisers even after the Simpson trial sparked heightened public interest in the legal system, what makes you think it would be successful now? Remember, it's all about the bottom line, and a low-budget trash channel with a small viewership always looks better on the balance sheet than a channel with substance and production/talent costs with a small viewership does.

Umm this gotta be that Chicken and egg riddle type arguments here. Yes money is at play for HLN though. Then why is ID Discovery and Oxygen fighting for the same audiences HLN is seeking such as people who like to watch crime documentaries and murder mysteries. Yes its low brow though and somehow HLN must have seen the dollar signs there for crime content though.

Of course Ted Turner has nothing to do with CNN or HLN today. So using the "Turner" name is useless, though I guess one could argue TBS and TCM are still alive today. The question though is what should Time Warner do with HLN?

Actually Turner Broadcasting System is still the corporate name, although it is a subsidiary of Time Warner. Turner has a CEO and Chairman. The decision would likely be made by CNN or Turner, not Time Warner.
