What stations should I listen to?

I'm taking a trip the week after Thanksgiving. Can you guys recommend some good stations? (Dial Global affiliates would be fine, too).

I'll be heading down I-81 in Virginia into Tennessee (Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg). Then western NC & SC into northeast Georgia (Commerce). Then east to Myrtle Beach.

I have a book listing every station in the U.S. & Canada with format (Radio on the Road: The Traveler's Companion by William Hutchings), but it's 7 years old and the way formats change these days, it was probably out of date as soon as it was published.

You didn't say how you would get from Georgia to Myrtle Beach.

I did a search one time to see what they have in Augusta. Their good music station is at 1240, but that's one of those 1000-watt frequencies. Probably won't last long.

Columbia has 1590 AM, last time I checked. Another really weak signal.

But Easy 105.9 has a listenable signal a long way from Myrtle Beach. I do pretty well with it north of Florence. If you have a digital radio, maybe you won't get too much interference from the hip-hop station at 106.3.

I nearly forgot. Hopeless Classics is at 106.1 and that should have a listenable signal around Columbia, when you can't hear 1590.

I forgot to notice you were going through North Carolina.

1400 AM is Dial Global west of Asheville, and 1600 AM is Useless Classics south of Asheville.

Also EZ 88 and AM 1040 in East Tennessee.

During a trip back in June of this year, my wife and I listened to WNPC AM 1060 while in the mountains between Madisonville, TN and Easley, SC. I think it was licensed to Kingsport TN.

It was only a 1000 watt daytimer so it didn't last long either..especially in the mountains.

It looks like the calls may have been changed since then.

My book shows listings for WNPC 1060 as well as 92.9 in Newport TN, WQBB 1040 in Knoxville, WMXF 1400 in Waynesville NC, WTZQ 1600 in Hendersonville NC, and I'm familiar with EZ88 and Easy 105.9. But nothing for those frequencies in Augusta and Columbia. That's OK... they could be listed under nearby small towns and I know the book is outdated. It still shows WJYR 92.1 as Easy Listening in Myrtle Beach and 105.9 as WNMB.

Thanks, vchimp and Alan. I should be within listening distance of all these places.

From Commerce, down to I-20 to Augusta over to Columbia, then Florence.

Sounds like you'll be passing by my neck of the woods, Piegon Forge/Gatlinburg.

WOEZ Easy 88.3 Knoxville is nice and can be received well there but I hope you like Christmas music, because they went 24/7 with it a couple of weeks ago.

WQBB 1040 from Knoxville is "Music of Your Life" but daytime only.

As for WNPC 92.9 in Newport, they are country

Thomson and Camden are the cities of license.

Now THAT is outdated! :D

I think they are filling the gap left when the hot AC station went Jack. A really smart move for the Jack station, it turned out.
