Alaska What The CPB Funding Cut Would Mean To Rural Alaska

Published today in The Guardian

The headline is "‘Rural America costs a lot of money’: Trump cuts are decimating a radio station at the edge of the world."

This is a lengthy article, detailing the operation of a station in an Aleutian Island town of 600 which has no other radio service.

Those folks in Saint Point and Saint Paul can hear absolutely nothing else whatsoever except AM's from Japan, Hawaii and Anchorage (800 miles away!)

The thing I don't understand is why nobody asks Begich why he voted to take $12 million away from his state? Is Alaska so rich that it doesn't need $12 million a year in federal aid? Probably because he doesn't take questions.

He voted for the funding rescission, citing people having other choices these days.. cell phones, internet, tv.. etc) and Sullivan who spoke in favor of rural public broadcasting then showed his ass and voted for the rescission.

People who live in DC have lots of media choices. Maybe he should spend a week in McGrath. This is a guy who is way out of touch with his homies.

They're not in there to represent people in McGrath. They're there in general to represent their own self interests and convince the people of Alaska they've got to send them back every term to fight all the things that are supposedly making their lives less than great, then retire very comfortably.

Andy, when nick begich made the statemnt, he was speaking on behalf of or in his opinion of... most alaskans and their choices/options.

I'd say it was his opinion of it. I highly doubt he gave much consideration to any counterpoints once the President's wishes were known.

Murkowski at least, expressed some concern and understanding of the situation.
