Considering that Hank's increase was considerably more than FMS' decline, what and who is driving the numbers? You would think that the number of country listeners would be rather static.

Not in Indiana. Trust me, there are enough listeners to support as many country stations as the Corporates put on the AIR. Here in Morgan County, we have 92.7, 95.5, 97.1, 99.9, 101.5, 102.3, and 105.1, all audible doing country formats. And that is not counting all the ones that just fringe in, or are dx able, which dont count, really, since only radio geeks listen to those Weak signals. But trust me, any one will tell you, that there are plenty of country listeners to go around, and some of the younger country demos listen to Rock, Hot ac, or CHR as well, so country can pull listeners from lots of other formats. I know alot of people who like both CHR, and Country, and alot of Q95 listeners are also Part time country listeners.

It's all about presentation. Hank is still new and different to most Indianapolis radio listeners. While the music on Hank and FMS may be the same (has anyone compared playlists?), the presentation is certainly different. Plus it's interesting to see jocks with relatively little country music experience be DJ's on Hank. While I don't work in country radio, I'm told that today's country radio station is the CHR of 10 years ago; Upbeat, lively, and fun.

It's important to realize that radio listening is not a pie of fixed size. It can get bigger or smaller. In this case, it appears the pie got larger. "Hank" apparently created listening that wasn't being done prior to its existence. Now, that listening could have been people coming back or into radio (increased cume) or people who were listening to some radio listening a lot more now that something that more closely matches what they desire has come into existence (increased TSL).
