What the phunk?

WNCI insists on playing a chopped up version of "Black Eyed Peas - Don't Phunk With My Heart" instead playing "Don't MESS With My Heart". What gives? Since when has the word "Phunk" or "Funk" become a bad word? How come "Don't Phunk With My Heart" can be heard on other radio stations across the country and be heard on various TV programs including MTV but WNCI feels the need to change it? Am I missing something here or does this just re-affirm how unbelievably horrid WNCI is at being a CHR? I just don’t know what else to say anymore except for that WNCI is a true embarrassment to Columbus radio and across the country.
______________

You could say the same thing about Eminem's new "song" "Ass Like That". I heard Kiss Cleveland play the CHR version with "ass" edited out, but their promo right before the song said it plain as day. MTV doesn't edit out "ass", but changes "pee pee" to "slinky".

Of course, this doesn't address the fact that both songs suck. Oh well.

Who knows. I don't see a problem with it, unless they are playing it safe because of the Federal Craptacular Committee.

One of these days NCI will look at the ratings...

They continue to make head-shaking moves and you can see it is affecting them in the ratings. WCKX beat them by nearly a full point in the last book although they closed the gap in the current trend. Still though, fourth in the market for the most powerful stick in the market is a shame. Time to open the wallet and run another contest to buy your listeners. I would be insanely curious to know how the Morning Zoo is doing in their daypart.

In other ratings news, CC has to be happy with the continued climb of both LZT and TPG. I don't think 1230 has been this high for at least 3 formats.

I am not really surprised Ted has remained rather anemic. Variety Hits has great potential but NAB has managed to kill it with Soft AC adds.

I'll tell ya what.
They don't have a choice.
Clear Channel corporate told all of their radio station to NOT play that song. They are all required to play the "mess" version.
WNCI has no choice.

How about the continue rise of WTVN? Most talkers around the country have been going down in ratings, while WTVN continues to rise. They are up almost a share in the recent trend. They aren't doing anything different except for having Joel Riley from 7p to 10p (Sterling's old slot)...is that really making a difference?

That doesn't surprise me about CC but since when did they decide funk was a bad word? It was all good in the 80's when Prince used the word funk in his songs but 20 years later it's not ok anymore? Why is it ok for MTV to play the right version but it isn't for CC? It just doesn't make any sense.
______________

My thinking exactly. They didn't twitch playing EMF Unbelievable (where they don't even use the word "funk"... they go for the full monty in that one albeit distorted enough to 'hide' it) but now they back down. I am sure this is all a product of the FCC's $500,000 curse jar.

It's ironic that radio stations can be fined 100's of thousands of dollars for words that you hear blasting out of car stereos incessantly as you walk down the street. Or in your friendly neighborhood bar, for that matter. And in the Black Eyed Peas case it's not even a bad word.

A rabid member of one of the "family" councils even complained to the FCC about a profanity in the decades-old Joni Mitchell song "Big Yellow Taxi". They actually heard a word wrong. Thought it said, "They paved paradise, and put up a 'f*cking' lot". (For those unfamiliar with the song, what they actually put up was a parking lot.) For real.

I hear CC's Classic Rock stations, which simply went back to the "funky kicks" edit of "Jet Airliner" (vs. "funky sh*t) are now going to edit it futher to "messy kicks goin' down in the city". They will also re-title that classic by the James Gang to "Mess 49". A couple of their stations that still play 70's pop will be re-editing the old Wild Cherry song to "Play That Messy Music Caucasion Man". And their Urban AC's will henceforth refer to Funkadelic as "Messadelic". Further, because some listeners with their hearing aid batteries running low are hearing, "We're a Q**r Channel station", the company is considering changing its name to "Loud Channel" to avoid the wrath of the in-your-face "Parents Tell Eveybody What They Can See and Hear in the Name of Family-Protection and Moral Clarity" council. (I think Rod Parsley, Phil Burress and Ken Blackwell are co-chairs of that one.)

Seriously, though, Funk/Phunk isn't usually used as a verb in hit music, is it? While this *still* doesn't justify the edit, it makes the lyrics more aggressive and likely to be mis-heard...so this edit may be less egregious than editing out Funk elsewhere would be. It's more likely to be heard wrong in the Black Eyed Peas song than with the typical noun or adjective usage.

BTW, for anyone who hasn't seen the Mis-heard lyrics site, it's loads of fun. Here's the Black Eyed Peas page:

http://www.amiright.com/artists/blackeyedpeas.shtml

P.S. I had to go back and change my post to say "Q**r" in the third paragraph because Radio-Info automatically censored it when I spelled it out. Seems strange considering NBC splashes the word all over its schedule. But perhaps Radio-Info did this because people were using the word to attack each other, which would indeed be a pathetic and immature thing to do.
Edited by Nu_Roo_2 on 06/09/05 05:08 PM.

I think you are correct sir. I too believe that because the word funk/phunk was used as a verb that it could be misinterpreted as you know what and that is probably why they censored it. Now I also agree with you 100% that this does not make it right. It must be ok though to play 50 Cent's Candy Shop even though he's rapping about wanting some girl to lick his lollipop.
______________

The original post wasn't complaining so much about it being edited, but that they didn't use the "Don't MESS with my heart" version. This version was made specifically for the reason that "phunk" was too close, but they use the "blanked" out version.

Come again? I'm not too sure what you mean. Who uses the blanked out version? I didn't even know there was a blanked out version.

When you say chopped up version, do they reverse the "phunk" part, or just silence the word out completely? I don't listen to WNCI, so I'm not sure what version they are playing.

They replace the word phunk with mess and you can even hear a hiss during the voiceover that makes it sound chopped.

By the way, WNCI is just a flip through my presets. I can't stand listening to them for more than one or two songs at a time. I don't want to get a bad reputation over here, you know.

It's interesting they play a hacked version. There was a professional radio edit of the "mess" version released. Guess they don't subscribe to that music service?

Riley is a good addition and seems more consistent with the rest of the station. But, in 30 days that double digit share will wilt in the summer humidity as February is dropped off the rolling average.

Odd cuz on Friday afternoon about 5:30pm I heard the Dont MESS with My heart version. Clear Channel WAN's all their music to their stations, so I am sure they have access to it in NexGen (Prophet).

I saw this post and had to reply.

First of all, I just wrote a music review for the 360 guide in the Lima news Friday on the Black Eyed Peas new cd (which sucked). We play the "Phunk" version and they don't even say phunk...it is more like Don't Ph___k with my heart. I mentioned in my music review that everyone around us...(CC) for the most part is playing the "Mess" version. Now, we have been getting some phone calls from parents saying how they cant believe we are playing that version, they know what it's saying and in their eyes thats all that matters. Well I know someone else mentioned this but if stations can play Candy Shop, Lovers and friends and other various songs and parents are not complaining about this, then why the heck can't we play a song that has nothing wrong with it. I am not the consaltant who decides the music, tho I have final say and I refuse to play songs like Candy Shop and lovers and friends, no matter how popular they are....I also refuse to pull a version of a song that has the word "Phunk" and doesnt even say that, just because everyone else is playing "Mess" version...with that being said...I have to take into consideration my listeners, we do target ADULT WOMEN...if the women listening are offended by anything we play, then I think it needs to be looked at.

As far as NCI, they are one of the better CC stations around. I gotta give props to the PD, it's not easy dealing with "some" of the staff he deals with. As far as the Black Eyed Peas are concerned, they just suck regardless. This has been a fun topic tho for the past few weeks.

I'm sure it's only going to be a matter of time before stations get fined for things people think they heard.
