2/3 of the state is Eastern Standard or Eastern Daylight (Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, South Bend and Terre Haute) while the other 1/3 is Central Standard or Central Daylight (Hammond, Gary and Evansville).

I've popped into Hammond once in July, blocks over the state line from Illinois, on an NICTD commuter train. They were on Central Daylight Time.

I had a full-blown visit to Indianapolis roughly a month later. They were on Eastern Daylight Time. I still think they should be on Central Daylight Time, in my opinion.

How late does the sun set in summer on the far western edge of the Eastern zone? I remember driving through Tennessee one summer and seeing the sun still up around 9:30 on the EDT side.

On June 21st, the sunrise and set times in Indianapolis 6:17 AM and 9:16 PM.

For comparison...

The same day, Nashville, which is in the Central Time Zone, has a sunrise and sunset of 5:30 AM and 8:08 PM. Sooooo...if they were Central, Indy would be 5:17 AM and 8:16 PM.

Indy has never been on Central time, at least not in my lifetime (born there in 1955). During the summer, the Indy network affiliates delayed their prime-time shows by an hour to run them 8-11 PM, same as during the winter, despite being in the same time zone as Chicago.

No. NW Indiana near Chicago and the Evansville market are CST/CDT

Where I am in Knoxville TN (western edge of EDT) it's not quite as late as it was when I lived in Ohio and Indiana. June 21 sunrise is 6:19am, sunset is 8:56. Dayton Ohio gets a few minutes more-6:09-9:08. It's not only how far west but how far north.

I mentioned that above. Before tape delay Indiana markets had prime time 7-10 during the time everyone else was on daylight time, and 8-11 the rest of the year.

Arizona, except the Navajo Reservation, does not observe DST. Therefore we are two hours behind ET during winter and three behind during DST (and easier way of saying that AZ is MST during winter and PDT during summer).

The Navajo Reservation spans territory in AZ as well as NM so they do observe DST within the reservation borders. However, the Hopi Reservation, which is completely surrounded by the Navajo does not observe DST.

In 1992 I was doing work for Honeywell at the Sacaton Hospital (on the Res) south of Phoenix. All of the guys that worked there knew that I wasn't from Arizona. They were waiting in the office to laugh at me when I showed up an hour late when DST kicked in.

When did the Gila River Res ("Sacaton") observe DST? AFAIK, only the Navajo Res in NE AZ does.

At least per Google Maps, there is no Orson IN. Maybe it's a small settlement (as small, unincorporated Indiana towns are often called) with no post office of its own. I only see Orson IA (Central Time) and Orson PA (Eastern Time) when I do a search.

I think the OP simply meant he assumed AZ observed DST so he went to work late. You are correct that the only political entity in AZ to observe DST is the Navajo Reservation (which is import to them as the reservation spans both AZ and NM and otherwise they would be in two different time zones).

Orson, IN is the fictional town that sitcom "The Middle" is set in.

The show is about, what else, a moderately dysfunctional blue collar family. It has its moments but is a bit uneven from episode to episode.

Not as convenient of a trip between the two as I made it out to be, I see. That's fair enough, but Conway Twitty actually did take the names from the two towns after seeing them on a map he was using at the time. That's no myth or urban legend.
