What to do about WSJS, WSML, WZTK and WMFR under Curtis Media?

After reading comments regarding the soon-to-be acquired WSJS, WSML, WMFR
and WZTK, the only changes i would make is eliminating the local talk show on
WSJS from 3 until 6pm, put "Sean Hannity" there, move that program from 9am
until 12 Noon, shift "Laura Ingraham" to 8pm to 10pm, put in "Jim Bohannon"
from 10pm until 1am, and have "Coast To Coast" from 1am until 5am.
On weekends, add "Coast To Coast" from 9am until 6am...
As for WMFR and WZTK, leave things as they are.

Ditch Everything syndicated and go Local with everything!

Yep! Even more than that! KHVH in Honolulu airs Coast for 10 hours straight every night from 7 to Midnight and again from Midnight to 5.

I didn't even know that until today. I was just browsing through random station sites and came across theirs. I was as surprised as you were at the idea of running 9 hours of the show!

You might see some changes in the SJS late night and overnight lineup once CBS/Westwood are out of the picture. It it were my decision:

* Ditch O'Reilly at 10PM. Show is too old by that time of day. Also opposite himself on TV and he talks about the TV show a lot. Never really cared for that kind of one-way promotion (TV never returns the favor).

* Carry Bohannan live 10PM to 1AM.

* Coast To Coast 1AM to 5AM. (4 hours is more than enough!)

* Add some local news headlines overnight. Can be delivered by the ON board op from wire copy and matrial left by news staff. Would, of course, require hiring people who can multi-task and string more than two words together.

Pretend that more than 50 percent of Americans voted DEMOCRATIC in the last election, and do something truly remarkable...have someone with a different freakin' point of view! How about Randi Rhodes?

Alam Colmes is on WZTK, though I wouldn't be opposed to hearing Rhodes on any one of the stations as well. There are plenty of other libtalk hosts out there as well who are entertaining as well as opinionated... I wouldn't be opposed to hearing them either.

Here's an idea: how about a local Democratic perspective? Issues that matter to the Triad from the point of view of someone on the left. There's no reason it couldn't do well if done right!

Years ago, WMFR-AM had a talk show called "Opinion Please", hosted by a liberal slanted local personality (also their PD), Dennis Elliott. The show was the hottest thing in High Point, but it was because everybody loved to call in and debate him. He was the man that everyone loved to hate! The show was thought-provoking and lively, with lots of local guests. Dennis now works for CC and does their websites (I believe). Too bad, he was great on the air and did lots of show prep. He also had the intelligence and guts to pull it off. It was definitely a departure for this area.

I think a point, counter point type of local show would be great. Dennis could certainly make up half of that team! Sort of a Hannity and Combs for local issues.

Great idea! You could be the other side! I think you guys should approach them about it. It would be an awesome show that both sides would want to listen to. The only thing I don't like about Hannity's show is that Combs is a weaker presence. You guys could make it more equal and it would be perfect timing before the 2008 elections.

Charlotte had that in 1997. I think that's right. Total Radio tried a format with local talk during most of the broadcast day. It failed so badly it was gone after a few months and they played Christmas music, then standards, then simulcast Christian before finally going Disney. They've been Disney for nearly ten years.

Something like Curtis & Kuby up New York way? I love listening to them online. I'd love to hear a Triad-based show along those lines!

The difference in this case, vchimpanzee, is 1) this would not be a fulltime format, and 2) it would be on a well established talk station.

I didn't say it wouldn't work. I was just making the point that it was tried, though it was tried by a station that didn't have a lot of luck with it.

Don't expect to see Gib and John go anywhere as long as current management is in place. They pay too much money for their show! In fact, look for "paid guests" on WZTK if the WS leadership has anything to say about it.
