I'M THINKIN ABOUT AN ALL NEWS KZON 101.5 . ?

BIG BUILDING FOR A NEWS STAFF .

SHARE NATIONAL REPORTS AND COMMENTARIES FROM OTHER INFINTY NEWS STATIONS .

RETAIN AIRSTAFF FOR PRODUCTION .

KEEP THE CURRENT HIGH ENERGY IMAGING .

.
.

IT'S WHAT KTAR SHOULD DO, BUT WON'T .

CAN IT WORK ?

.
.

IF NOT,

ALL 'CHILL', ALL THE TIME .

Or they could keep some of the current audience with a non-political talk format. Versus the other monotonous crap in PMD, Leykis could do well.

HOT TALK ABOUT RIPPING HITS OFF THE BONG AND GETTING LAID. ?

NO THANKS.

Ironic you say that since KZON is located in the old KOY building, which in its heyday, housed a tremendous news staff. There's plenty of room in the building, even with KMLE sharing the space.

But I can't see all news working. I've said it many times before on this board: all-news is too expensive because you need a huge staff and Phoenix, despite its population growth and status as the state capitol, largest city, yada yada, is just not large enough to justify 24 hours a day of news. It would have to be augmented with something. That's why KFYI and KTAR exist so well with their mixture of talk, news, sports (KTAR), etc.

Heck, even Boston doesn't do news 24/7.

When Phoenix can get New York/LA/Philly AM Drive rates, then you'll get your all news.

SELL it to "Sierra H"
and put Energy 92.7 on that stick.
then maybe Energy would actually Have some "Energy"
and with all the space, make it into a big Dance club, so energy wouldn't lose the dance floor feel )

Energy - YES! Totally outside the box.

BINGO!!! Pure vision! But to add a little panache, they would need to incorporate some of KFNX's unique brand of programming. Maybe they could have Energy fans buy block time and talk about dance music, alternative lifestyles, raves and where to score some good E.
Edited by mr_carlson on 08/11/05 02:25 AM.

ALL NEWS KZON

WHEN WE HAVE OUR NEXT NATIONAL EMERGENCY,

MOST STATIONS (WHO ARE STILL ON-AIR) WILL BECOME 'ALL-NEWS'.

SOME WILL GO BACK TO REGULAR PROGRAMMING; A COUPLE WILL STAY 'ALL-NEWS'.

NOW, MORE THAN EVER BEFORE.. YOU NEED.. 'ALL-NEWS, KZON'.

CITIZENS WILL WANT TO KNOW WHY THEIR WATER AND ELECTRICITY ISN'T WORKING.

.
.

I CHOOSE KZON BECAUSE OF HOWARDS DEPARTURE. ..AND WE KNOW THAT HOWARD CARRIES KZON.

ULTIMATELY I'D CHOOSE A TOWER AWAY FROM THE SOUTH MOUNTAIN CLUSTER; IN CASE THE SOUNDGARDEN IS 'TAKEN-OUT'.

IT DOESN'T NEED TO BE COSTLY TO RUN AN 'ALL-NEWS' STATION IF YOU USE NATIONAL REPORTS AND COMMENTARIES FROM OTHER INFINITY NEWS STATIONS.

.
.

I'LL HAVE MORE JUSTIFICATION LATER.

But then, if the much rumored Infinity/Bonneville swap goes down, you'd have a built in news source from KTAR....live and local!

KTAR-AM/FM....nice ring.

And it gives a Bonneville a more viable group with formats they are familar with and comfortable programming. I think there would be a good overlap with KOOL, KMLE and KPKX in the same fold. Complementary without cutting each others throats (like the folks over at Sandusky are fond of doing)

My good man, I don't mean to bust your chops, but it just ain't gonna work! If the market was clamoring for an All-News format, someone would do it.

As it stands now, when 9-11 occurred, KFYI, KTAR and KJZZ all did admirable jobs carrying important news. If, for some reason, there was an emergency of such great magnitude that more stations need to carry news product, it can be done.

You could hear KTAR on 620 AM, and 98.7. KFYI could be carried on 550 AM as well as KNIX, KZZP, KMXP, KESZ, etc.

In fact Clear Channel did news updates on its FMers for about a year following 9-11 and KOOL carried CNN for maybe two years or so. There are reasons those things aren't being done today - no market demand.

Radio news (and I did it for 11 years) is designed to give people immediate updates on what's going on. It's not designed for long-form. Even All News stations like KNX, KFWB, etc. don't expect listeners to tune in for more than 20 minutes at a time.

As for your suggestion that all it would take is for Infinity to use reports from other Infinity stations nationwide, let's consider that:

How much news reported by KNX (to use one example) is going to be relevant to a large audience in Phoenix? Whatever relevant stories they may report would most likely be on a national feed anyway.

So what you propose is taking local reports from multiple cities and airing them in Phoenix, and assuming that Phoenix listeners would find them relevant to their lives.

I doubt that's gonna build cume and be saleable.

If you're going to do All News, really do it. Get the best staff, cover the heck out of the market and make it all relevant to the local listener. Otherwise, you're going to have an expensive signal that may as well be dark.

WHEN I'M OUT N ABOUT, I ASK THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY'D WANT TO HEAR ON THE RADIO; THE RESPONSE IS.. ALL NEWS, ALL JAZZ, CHILL MUSIC (WHICH I WOULD INCLUDE TROPICAL, SAMBA, SALSA, BOSSA NOVA) & TALK RADIO FOR WOMEN.

I SAID, SHARE INTERNATIONAL / NATIONAL STORIES.

THERE WILL BE LOCAL NEWS STAFF, FOR SURE.

Nope. It would truly be a waste of an FM frequency since talk is just fine on the AM. Plus, the Hot Talk audience will move to satellite so they can hear the naughty words. "HE HE HE, he said #$%@ on the radio..."

While I got a chuckle out of this at first, if somebody came up with a format that was presented as the next generation of Smooth Jazz, it just might work.

You could not go banging the electronic/dance drum! Instead, present it as your HIP in-office, evening love station for the young urban adult 25-40. The SJ audience is aging and this is a way of attracting a younger audience.

SJ did not come out of the gate banging the Jazz drum. They were stations called (and still called) The Wave & Oasis. It focuses more on the relaxation and lifestyle of the listener than the genre of music. You can call it something like Metro, Mod, Chill or Groove. My point is focus on the lifestyle, not the music. Listeners will get the music after they discover it.

There is plenty more where that came from! Station owners feel free to email me! LOL =:)

THE LISTENERS HAVE DISCOVERED THE 'CHILL' LIFESTYLE...

IT'S THE RADIO PROGRAMMERS THAT HAVEN'T MADE THE DISCOVERY YET.

Chill, radio programmers are not the only ones that have not made the "chill" lifestyle discovery yet. The numbers of these listeners is very small right now, by commercial radio standards. Even though this is a very desirable demographic, like SJ, I don't believe the numbers are large enough YET to warrant a major format change.

With that being said, the same could be said for the SJ format in the late 80's/early 90's. Those programmers had to take a chance and it paid off for them eventually. Realize, Smooth Jazz was not a hit straight out of the box.

Again, I cannot stress this enough, for this to succeed the presentation would have to distance itself from the dance/electronic genre and skew more Acid Jazz, as an evolution of SJ. Don't get me wrong, I love dance/electronic music, but this would have to appeal to Joe Six-Pack of Amstel Light, not just the "CHILL Lifestyle" community to be a major success. Just take a look at the commercial dance stations of the last few years for evidence.

P.S. Groove Salad at somafm.com is the best!

Funny thing is, they all have discovered the 'Caps Lock' key on their keyboards - but I guess you never found THAT treasure map.
______________

I'd hate to get dragged to any of those places you hang out, or accidentally stumble in, for that matter.

Who'd be so dull to want to listen to an all-news station? For most, I think the little quarterly reports and bigger top and bottom reports do just fine.

And I guess "the people" have never heard a commercial or seen the billboards for 95.5, or maybe accidentally tuned into it? "Duh, I want all jazz station! Have you seen my baseball?"

"What would you like to hear on the radio?" "Bossa nova." Give me a friggin' break. Are you sure you are talking to other people, or just conversating with your multiple personalities?

As far as talk radio for women goes, we already have that - it's called KFYI's weekend programming. With all that estrogen I'm sure it bleeds once a month.

THE 'CHILL' LIFESTYLE IS FOR THE TRAGICALLY HIP. IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND 'CHILL', YOU'RE JUST NOT ONE OF THEM.

BTW - HOW CAN YOU 'CHILL' WHEN YOU'RE ALWAYS yelling.

My idea of the 'CHILL' lifestyle: Passing by the 'CHILL' channel on Sirius on my way to another channel, unless of course they're playing bossa nova. Who could pass that up? IT MAKES ME WANNA GO TO RIO DAY SHUNERO AND DANTH.

> THE 'CHILL' LIFESTYLE IS FOR THE TRAGICALLY HIP. IF YOU
> DON'T UNDERSTAND 'CHILL', YOU'RE JUST NOT ONE OF THEM.

Good point. Tragically hip doesn't work on radio...a mass-appeal medium.

The "CHILL" format is so hip and so new, I've only seen it referenced by one person in one place...over and over again.

The person calls themself CHILL and the place is here, a site that only radio insiders and superfans read.

Narrowcasting to one person isn't going to work for the Zone. Neither is narrowcasting to the other pet format (Energy) on this board.

Zone needs to find a large niche and stick with it. They had a good thing going awhile back when they were branding everything they played as "Zone Music."

Now they're just a bad clone of what the Edge used to sound like at 106.3/100.3
