What to do with two bad seeds.....

Well, if you are Cox Radio, you are caught in a situation that you never saw coming this fast. WDYL and WMXB are quickly sinking faster than the Titanic. I suggest the following ideas for the stations, which are now beaten down to a bloody pulp pretty much.

WDYL: Become Richmond's version of WJFK. Have Mancow in the morning here(I can hear the groans and wailing about now folks). I know I am against syndicated talent, but this is a station on life support. If Mancow won't budge, either Lex and Terry or someone local for Richmond's Hot Talk. Afternoons will be Don and Mike, say no more on that one for ANYONE who has heard their show! Probably the FUNNIEST 4 hours in a day. Get some LOCAL talent in there as well that can really get things rolling. At night and on the weekends, GO PROGRESSIVE! Forget the Modern Rock already, WRXL has put the nail in the coffin with that. Time for Hot Talk and Progressive Rock, Richmonds Y101.

WMXB: Remember, this station was a CONSISTANT top 10 station before Mix 103.7(Lite 98 on a 30 minute delay without the 60's and 70's) came on the air. Now I look at it and I have ONE cure in mind for this, stop trying to be a Lite 98 clone. Lite 98 has been a GREAT station for years and trying to become a spur of the minute Lite 98 clone has FAILED. Go back to your RECENT past and get back to the HotAC format you had for years. Yes, mornings were like a revolving door in the last few years, but John Berry is still great in PM drive. Get in a show for morning drive that will stick around longer than Jackie and Bender but with a good catch to wake up to. You won't beat out Bill Bevins, but at least you won't be trying to do what he does a HECK of a lot better!

Right now, The Planet is beating out the rock stations, but MIGHT be sweating because of Liberty, that will be seen down the road. K95 is safe, The wolf will cause a dent, but K95 will remain a top 5 powerhouse.

WDYL will be blown up - not if but when - it has no chance again WRXL.

WMXB - you miss what COX is trying to do with it. It has achieved corporate success for them already. Lite 98 is down and K95 is up - that's all MIX station is supposed to accomplish. Siphon off some listeners from LITE.

Proof?

How much is COX plowing into local TV this fall? Lots based on how many times I see the commercial...

As long as MIX holds down Lite for the success of others in the chain - all will be well on Mix 103.7 -

Add on top of that - LIBERTY will pull some from Lite - (and some from MIX too for that matter) - and it'll be sure to hang around for a while.

Y-101 HAS to have a good book...if I'm not mistaken, Richmond is one of Cox's highest billing markets per capita.

To sum it up...

The stations I would worry about are 101.1 and 107.3...though 107.3 does suprisingly well in the middle-age demos.

101.1 HAD the upper hand on the X in the 12-25 area. I think the X has taken that title away.

If I'm not mistaken, the X was #5 in the recent morning ratings...behind K-95, 'RVA, Bevins, and Power (that one suprised me)

Then again, with the X being a active/alt rock mix (ala FM99), maybe we can support two modern rockers (Hell, Norfolk supports 3)

I would think something, maybe not a full-fledged format flip, will occur at 101.1 if they don't increase big time by December

You will see NO CHANGES in either WMXB or WDYL.Cox is VERY corporatly programmed.Having spent some time in that building,I can tell you the local managment has VERY LITTLE TO SAY about programming. All the programming decisions come FROM THE TOP,OUTSIDE OF RICHMOND.The current approach that WMXB is using was implemented from the Cox home office, because it's working in some larger Cox markets. They won't change it unless it really bombs out. It's called corporate ego.And Y101 is going to stay just like it is.From what I've been told from some "insiders' down there,Cox doesn't care if Y101 makes money or not.It seems the Cox Rock Director wants to the current format because of an alleged "pissing match" he's having with the Clear Channel Rock Director.Another thing, you will NEVER see Mancow in this market.Dan,I don't know how long you've been here but take from someone who's been working in this market for THIRTY years,Shock jocks won't work here. The market will NOT accept them.As I stated in previous posts,Howard was CLOBBERED by Bill Bevins and the more established and "family friendly" Morning talents we had here at the time.Plus, you see the hot water that CC has gotten itself into with Star & Buc Wild on The Beat.If you're going to play in Richmond radio, you'd better be "family friendly".Even the Q Zoo keeps lid on the risky humour. They KNOW that it won't work here.

I agree with you completely. My political views are probably 180 degrees from the Ukrop family, but I find most shock just boring and stupid. They tend to make school yard jokes about women, gays, and other minorities. Most of them are actually rather superpatriotic when it comes to macho stuff like war. It took the firing of Bubba The Love Sponge to get any of them to question the regime in DC. I'd rather listen to Bill Bevins or Drew Phinney who was actually very funny in a subtle way than Bubba, Howard, or any of them.

Encyclopedia, with all due respect, I don't see Star and Buc Wild going ANYWHERE anytime soon out of the Richmond market unless CC gets rid of Elliot in the Morning(Howard Stern, CC style) who is heard locally on WRXL. Cox is going to lose money on this on both stations. The main issue at 103 was not so much the Hot AC format at the time before the switch, but more so the revolving door of AM drive hosts. At the time it looked as if after about 16 months, it was time to hit the road. With Y101 right now, they are dealing with the loss of Mike Murphey as he goes to Charm City. Mike was one of the jocks that started it when they went to Richmond's New Rock in 2001 from Richmond's New Rock Revolution when it signed on in 1999. I am thinking that Charlie might not be too far behind him and yes that will be a fatal blow to Y101. Denial can also hurt when you don't see that 20,000 watts will always beat out 6,000 watts after it gets established. Y101 had some ground when the war started and the X was getting it's feet into the ground as a Alternative rock station as opposed to the album rock that it had for years. In due time though, the X has taken the lead and has gotten established.

If cox is not worried about losing money, then yes as you said, the stations will stay the same. Mix will stay a Lite98 clone and bomb, while Y101 sinks futher down! If I were in that building, I would ask them a question, do we want to play second fiddle to Clear Channel or try to show them what we can do in this market. If they go for it and take some chances, it could work.

As for the pissing match back and forth it cuts both ways. I don't think that Cox's Rock Director liked the day that WRXL went alternative(I sure as hell didn't to be honest with you). As for CC's Rock Director, I am sure he didn't like the shots coming from Cox when The X came on the air, so on and so forth.

IMO, the Q Zoo died when Betty, Corey and Jay parted ways, the crew that is in there now(shakes head) makes me cry for the good ol days again.
