What to expect in 2011?

- Will CC kill off a monster or two (4 full time morning crew members + part-timers is excessive fo CC these days)?
- Johnny Magic has been on the air in this town 20 years ... like Bret Favre, is his streak about to end?
---- on that subject, what sports station will Doc show up on?
- Y'all expected Mix to Flip to AMP in 2010 ... gonna happen or not?
- WHTQ ... what will they do?
- Will Magic and or WMMO start voice-tracking 24/7 because it's just all about the music and nobody cares if they hear voices?
- Could DBO go live in the P.M. drive to try and stay-alive?
- What will Sunny do to keep fresh (or can you play the same 200 songs and still be a factor)?

... just trying to stir the pot a bit, what do you think?

Japman you've got-it going on, 2011, who know's? Marc Tillery would be better to weigh in on this as he has the pulse on central Florida radio, I suppose time and the number's will tell......

Sunny FM, I'm really disappointed, I thought they'd really do something unique, I was hoping for it, however all of my hope's we're dashed/slashed and trashed, as I am with several other stations here in the Orlando radio area, so in otherword's if 2011 is anything like 2010 any little change to your aforementioned station's for the better might come as a welcome surprise!

What I want to happen here in Orlando:
95.3 Party comes back, but on 96.5 WHTQ.
Big 810AM goes back to Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel.
A Rhythmic AC or Gen-X radio station debuts.
I finally get my first PAID radio position. ;)

What is possible for Orlando:
I think it would be smart of 103.1 WLOQ to flip to CHR & compete with XL 106.7.
I think 102 Jamz would be better off as "Hits & Hip Hop" like Wild 94.1 in Tampa.

Both of these stations, I've heard sweepers of them bragging about their heritage:
102 Jamz "since 1988", & 103.1 WLOQ "30-(something) years of local programming".

Mega 98.1 flipped because of ratings 2.2-2.5-2.4.
The next radio station to mimic those ratings under 3.0 will be the first one to flip.
WHTQ 96.5 seems the most likely as of now.
If the new Easy 93.1 in Miami succeeds early, I expect WHTQ 96.5 to flip to that "Soft & Easy Favorites" format if their ratings do not improve in the next few books.

Mix 105.1 will probably not flip to Amp like I said last year.
I think WMMO 98.9 voicetracks all the time.
I think the afternoon guy on Magic 107.7 sounds horrible.

Just my 2-cents. I just stirred the pot a little Mo. :D

More correctly, they flipped because 100.3 is taking all the money. They are looking for a new niche to sell.

You really haven't read anything Kabrich posts here, have you? (He's a consultant to Cox). They are happy with the 25-54 men numbers, HTQ provides the bulk of the 25-54 men for the cluster to sell. There's that word again... sell.

Again, HTQ provides 25-54 men. This format would not. Plus Orlando is a MUCH younger market than South Florida. They could sell (there's that word again... sell) that format down there, but in O-Town that would be a huge mistake.

Look, you're new, and if you've never worked at a commercial station, you just can't really appreciate how little it resembles what you do in college radio. What happens on the air is often the least important thing that goes on, especially in the big corporations. And you can't make any assessment on 6+ numbers when companies own multiple stations on a market, because it's like a basketball team, each station has its own job. At Clear Channel they called it "driving the lanes."

Not trying to bash, just pointing out that it's a different world out there than what you think....

While "Soft & Easy Favorites" might not be a good idea for Orlando it could be a big success in Daytona Beach. For years "Cool 105.9" did better in Daytona than Orlando and who can ignore the longtime success of then Root Communications Easy Listening WWLV (94.5). That said I would be shocked to see COX duplicate that with 96.5 or any of their current Orlando properties-now if COX were to buy say 98.1 I could see the format being DOMINANT along the Coast.

How is Cox over its limit? In a market the size of Orlando, one entity may own up to 8-stations, only five of which may be in the same service. Cox owns six Orlando radio stations and two TV station: 5-FMs and 1-AM. I realize the two TV stations in the same market alters the maximum number of radio in the same market Cox may own, but this was accounted for when Cox acquired WRDQ-TV and sold WHOO-AM (now WDYZ).

That's a very sad thing to say regarding the nature of commercial stations.
I think I'll enjoy my College radio experience while I have it.
At least I play what the people want. ;)

I'm not sure these are still in effect, but I believe there are also caps on the percentage of income a company can control in the market. Regardless, they are at the limit on FM.... they have 5... K92, Power, HTQ, MMO and Star. They can't buy 98.1, which was my real point.

If Cox is over the limit in anyway now, Cox may continue to own and operate the existing stations as they are grandfathered under the previous authorizations. However, if any ownership changes take place, again assuming Cox is over the limit under new rules, Cox will lose its grandfathered protection and may be forced to spin off something, most likely one of it's FM stations. In any event, you are absoultely correct in that Cox is currently at full local market cap with its FM Orlando holdings as 5-stations in the same service is the maximum allowed under any conditions.

Here's a far out never gonna happen...COX announces it's plan to put Soft & Easy Favorites on 92.3 ending K-92's long run...leaving WKRO in Daytona and K Country in Ocala as Central Florida's ONLY Country Stations. Would CBS or Clear Channel flip one of their frequencies to COUNTRY???

I don't see that happening. WWKA owns the Central Florida and Orlando country market and is very profitable for Cox Radio. WKRO and WOGK does not have a marketable single over Orlando, and neither station reaches Brevard. WOGK and WKRO each have a decent signal over Daytona Beach, but not Orlando although WOGK did pull just over a 1.0 share persons 6+ in Orlando.

97.5 WPCV out of Lakeland/Winter Haven area used to cover Orlando well and played a better mix of new/old country. Is it still around?
