What took me so long?

I've been around on various forums online for nearly 30 years, starting with rec.radio.broadcasting on Usenet. I was one of Bill Pfeiffer's "Radio Watchers", focusing on Kansas City and nearby markets. Later, I moved to Chicago where I met Bill, and had many, um, interesting phone conversations with him. As it turned out, my career in cybersecurity took off and I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where I still reside. My participation has varied from time to time. Even into the 2010s, ba.broadcast was an active newsgroup on Usenet. I was one of the participants in creating ba.broadcast.moderated and in establishing a group for moderation of rec.radio.broadcasting. Usenet dwindled, so did participation, and I and one other remaining moderator made the difficult decision during the pandemic to end those newsgroups. I have been semi-retired - emphasis "semi" - since 2020, and plan to fully retire later this year. I've always approached web-based message boards with some hesitancy, for reasons. I recently noticed, through a web search, that David Gleason is now one of the motivating forces behind this site. There's a name I felt that I could trust, and so I've hopped on board.

Now, you may ask, what is someone who's been in cybersecurity for 30 years doing talking about radio? Radio was my first career. I was news director of a radio station in Columbia, Mo., then an anchor/reporter at KTRH in Houston, hired by a terrific news director who was replaced by one who wasn't so terrific, and who chased lots of good people out of the business, not just me. After that experience, it took several years for my interest in radio to recover, but when the Internet became more widely available, it happened.

With the gradual decline of Twitter, which seems to be like the gradual decline of AM and FM radio, sped up about 20 times, I've been looking for alternates. I'm on Mastodon as well.

Markets I have an interest in, due to past residence or other reasons: San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago, Kansas City, Missouri in general, St. Louis, Houston, Albuquerque, Denver.

Thanks, moderators, for accepting my request for an account and I hope I can contribute at least a little something to the discussion from time to time.
