What up with 1290 AM WCHK status?

What up with 1290 AM WCHK status? They have not signed the signal back on since it changed hands. They flipped Sunny 100.3 to hispanic, but they did not do anything with 1290 am. The last I heard they were working on upgrading the equipment. Has anyone heard anything about this station and what format it might come back with?

WCHK was purchased by Greg Davis along with WSNY (Sunny 100). WSNY is simulcasting WLKQ in Buford (La Raza). Brian Barber, GM of WSNY and WLKQ, told me they signed WCHK off, and that Davis Broadcasting is working on moving the station. He didn't know how far or exactly where the transmitter could be moved.

Couple of notes on WCHK and Sunny. Roddy, it WNSY, WSNY is in Columbus, GA. As for WCHK being for sale, inquiries have been made. I won't quote the price, but it is WAY out of line! I also won't spread hearsay on what format or the move. I'm not that well informed. I do know that the tower site has to be moved as the previous owners did not include that property in the sale. And I will say that most local residents are not happy with the dark status. Many people did tune in to find out what was going on locally. They miss it.

:'(
I am sorry to hear of WCHK's "demise". I interviewed with Chuck McClure in Columbus and got the job to work there in 1973. I worked 5:30 to Midnight ...
5:30 to 6:30 Afternoon in the Country (Country Oldies)
6:30 to 7:30 Ol' Time Gospel Hour
7:30 to 10 Top 40
10 to Mid Easy Listening
I was a newlywed and lived over the garage next to the station on Hwy 5 South. I never have had such a sweet commute since! Byron Dobbs was all the time joking about the "goings on" between the newlyweds in that tiny apartment!

Right about Sunny in Columbus, GA. It's WGSY.

WSNY is the "Sunny" branded station in Columbus, OH.

Wanna really confuse the issue? When I was at Sunny 100 in Columbus, GA (PD/OM), there was a station licensed to Tifton with the calls WSGY (I think they were called "Y-100". They were at 100.3FM, Sunny 100 in Columbus was at 100.1FM, with calls WGSY. We got a lot of mail soliciting programming (and even some airchecks) that were sent inadverdently to us instead of Tifton.

BTW, that station (100.3 Tifton) is Clear Channel's country in Albany (WOBB).

Either that or I'm getting dementia.

There are many older listeners in northern Atlanta who don't get Ludlow Porch anymore. He had a big following in Cherokee, North Fulton, North Cobb, Forsyth, and Pickens County where WCHK was mostly heard. While they may have not contributed to the revenue at the station, many of them really enjoyed tuning in everyday to hear Ludlow and his brand of humor. It is sorely missed by many. Ludlow was their biggest program on the air.

Now for the truely bizarre! I used to work at WSGY/ Y-100! I did Middays there back in the late 80's. The commute to Tifton everyday was bad by south Georgia standards! Anyway, after several stations, I ended up at WNSY/ Sunny 100. I did 7-midnight there, and was PD and morning man at WCHK. I took it from talk to Americana. Which, by the way, was a ratings success. And yes, I had to record the "dead people files" or obits as some call it. That is how I found out that Elvis is STILL alive and living in Ball Ground! It seems his brother, Randal Presley died a few years back. And I swear, I had to read "He is survived by one brother, Elvis."

Which, if I'm not mistaken, would have been a guy (the surviving Elvis that is) who worked with my dad at a nearby mill in Pickens County back in the 70's. For obvious reasons, I never forgot his name even though I was a kid & didn't really know him.

SEE?? Obits bring us together! (tongue in cheek!)

Heck, I knew that already;)

After spending most of, what, 7 years I guess reading them for Huey, Sosebee, Cagle, Chapman and all the others I know that about as well as anybody.

The standing record, at the time I left there years ago at least, was something like 26 minutes of consecutive obits, I think 18 or 19 bodies. It was such a long dry read that I started the normally 4:50pm obits right after the bottom of the hour GN news, read for like 10 minutes then hit a 10 minute cart (the longest we had in the building) with Byron reading some, then I picked back up & finished them just in time to hit the top of the hour.

My personal record was 7 1/2 minutes of obits. I looped the "obit music" and just did it.

On another note, I was chatting with Byron on tuesday, and his complaint was that they now include PETS in the obits! He pointed to a current obit with all the blacked out parts! But, being the true champ he is, he read it without screwing up! I'm sure they will eventually have me include obits on Piggy, but for now, it's just pure oldies!

They also used to sell the time of day!!

Childre Chevrolet time is:

Every 15 minutes. Great programmimg and sales come together, thanks to Byron Dobbs

Did anyone find out the asking price for the station/property? Saw that the studio building is empty. The sign is gone from the front. It looks weird to see dishes and towers, with no lights on and no one home.

I spoke with someone (I can't say who) that approached them about buying WCHK. This is a direct contact, so it's not hearsay! Greg said he wanted 2.2 MILLION!! PLEASE! So I guess it's not going anywhere right now, even on the air.

That's a ripoff! I don't think that station is even worth $1 Million (and taking the station off of the air instantly decreased the value).

WCHK and WNSY went for $3.8 Million. Most of the value was/is in WNSY. I suspect the McClure family would not sell them seperately, only as a duo. Davis bought them solely for WNSY, and had no intention for WCHK (only to make an instant buck selling it).

If it stays dark sufficiently long, you can have the license for applying for uit to the FCC. You could likely build the facility for a million or less, depoending how many bells n whistles you add to it.
