"What Wal*Mart's HD Radio announcement means"

"But there's a dark side to that distribution, and it's this: What if simply making radios available isn't enough to induce consumers to buy and use them? As I've said before, the issue with HD has never been about availability - as we will soon discover. The issue has been about the fundamental value proposition."

And what if "simply making air available isn't enough to promote breathing". THE HORROR!

I'll hand it to the HD radio folks. This is a coup for you - said the poet.

The 800 lb. gorilla of retail carrying the product? Yup. That's pretty good.

Personally, I don't know what the impact will be. I suspect many of these radios will be bought and installed by people who aren't actually looking for the HD features - they're just looking for a nice car stereo. That will probably drive some word of mouth.

Of course, if Wal-Mart decides to dedicate some space to an HD display, instead of just making the HD unit another item in their typical car stereo displays, that changes the game altogether.

I suspect it will also generate some "me too" offerings from JVC's competitors in a Wal-Mart setting. Competition always drives down prices.

well most of the people buying from wal mart will have to get it installed somewhere else. so this really might not be a big deal. and will they actually be cheaper at wal mart?

"Are you waiting in line for your HD radio?"

"If you lower the price enough, folks will buy the radio. That's the belief about HD radio that is being stoked in our industry. And, of course, it's wrong."

HD radios have not sold at any retailer and they will not sell at Wal Mart.

Where exactly did you get your crystal ball?

Better yet, how does a background in computer programming qualify you to determine what will and will not sell at retail? I would assume the smart people at Wal Mart would know a bit more about their business than you do.

Just so we don't get full of ourselves, let's say AM was a new invention today--never been heard of before.

Would you pay $331 for a simple AM radio?

Because that's how much the most affordable 1923 Crosley would be in 2007 dollars.

And we all know how that turned out.

Continue your baiting...
