What was 94.3?

I know I am going to kick myself for asking but I can not remember what was on 94.3 before the short lived WNAK FM. I seem to remember a country station and a dancing raisin (probably unrelated – I hope). Any help dusting away the cobwebs would be greatly appreciated.

SInce the mid-80's 94.3 has gone through any number of incarnations including an oldies station, a country station, a bonus frequency for WBHT, a VERY short lived country station that Citadel did live before shutting that down in favor of running A-Town's Cat Country on it, then it became WNAK-FM. A long road indeed.

Started out as WCDL-FM, then it was WLSP, Lifestyle Country which I think is what it was when I left in 1983.

Even as the oldies station it went thru a few transformations ... Solid Gold 94, 94 3 SGD And Finally Cool 94.

Anyone remember The Radio Greats Reunion that Paul Ciliberto put together when it was, I think, 94.3 WSGD? That had to have been '88/'89.

Thanks, Mr. Vepster, I'd forgotten that it began life as WCDL-FM way back when people never even thought about FM. Most homes didn't have an FM receiver, nor did most cars.

Yeah .. They Even Got Frantic Freddie Mylander To Attend!

WSGD was a pretty well done radio station, ground up.
Bobby Vanderheyden, now programming WWRR, and formerly of WCBS-FM was the morning man, and if I put my thinking cap on, I could think of other former local personalities (I have tapes of the station, and all the jingles).
It had to be the mid nineties though, because I was at WDNH and it was my opinion we should go oldies (like I said, my opinion). But soon after that Bob Mermell bought WYCY and changed it to oldies, so had I stayed on, I would have my oldies station. WSGD did go country, mostly with a simulcast of 96.1 Cat country out of Allentown: it was short lived, and competed with the on/off country format of WDLS (now 93.7).

When I started At WSGD In 1989 (As Max Edison) It Was Doc Roberts with Annie Montoro On The Morning

Shift. Marilyn Kennedy (Bev From The Band "Pearl") Followed Them In The Mid-Day Position.

Drive Was The PD John "The Boz" Bosley ... I Followed Him Doing 7 to Midnight, And A Series Of Different

People Followed Me On The Overnight Including Bob "Diamond" Smith And A Woman Called Marianne Knight.

Others That Were There At The Time Included Mike Bettes From Australia (He Did A Stint At KRZ After That

Calling Himself "Ken Garoo") , R.J. Harkins (Late Of WARM) was There Too He Slid into the 7-Midnight Shift

When I Left To Help Put 107.7 On The Air In Tunkhannock. Scottie Young Had Taken Marilyn Kennedy's

Place Along The Way, Kathy Marshall Worked Part-Time... Former Scranton Cop Frank Galdieri Was There

Calling Himself "Brian Scott". And Another Great Part-Timer Was A Young Mike Evans (Now At Rock-107) And

The "Big Kahuna" Joe Cruz Was There Too. The Duke Was Running Things When I Went

Back For Awhile Part-Time In 1994 ... I Left There To Go To Froggy As The 1st "Jimmy Hoppa".

I Know I'm Forgetting People From 'SGD .... But That's The Best I Can Do For Right Now.

Doc Roberts is at WYCY Sunny 105 Hawley doing mornings.

Annie Montoro was doing middays VT'ed at WICK before the switch to "The Game". She works @ Marywood.

Joe Kruz was recently at WICK, then at WCDL, now on disability after a recent accident.

Duke over at Bold Gold WBS compound...

Paul Ciliberto at the Bold Gold compound in Honesdale...

Lindsey Lohan is in rehab...oh, sorry ;D

WSGD .... "where are they now?"

McAndrews ... An Iron Or Two In The Fire ... Getting The Itch Again (But It Might Be This New Detergent).

Open To Offers.

Skottie Young Has Gone Into Eternal Syndication ... I Miss Him.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh! Re-reading My Other Posting I Realized That I refered To The One Time WSGD

Program Director As "John Bosley" .... That Very Sharp PD .. Very Nice Guy's ... Actual Name Is John Boswell.

All Apologies Boz ... Where ever You May Be.

Must Have Had "Charlie's Angels" On My Mind.

Okay I couldn't resist...since we're on the subject of Solid Gold 94...the only station I was ever FIRED from.

Dave (Max)...you missed a couple of part-timers. Actually, some of them were already gone by the time you showed up.

There was also DAVE SKYLER TYLER...whom I think was actually a car salesman during the week.

Then of course there was YVONNE LEE who was sort of drafted from the WCDL side.

Did you mention JIM SPO? He was their first full-time evening guy before you or Bob Diamond. I think there was a time when he was dating some chick in the traffic office. He got into some "heated" argument with Boswell over some piece of production and he was fired on the spot. I only know that because I got the call at my house. "Mike. It's Boz. I just fired Spo. You need to work tonight."

Oh boy...five bucks an hour for playing "Chapel Of Love" by the Dixie Cups. But I was 18, I was more than happy to do it.

I liked Boswell, though we never met. Assuming he had no research budget, it was way pre-internet,probably just his thumbworn copy of Joel Whitburn's book..., I wrote him a note with some regional favorites that I thought should have been on the playlist.
He added most of them!!

I loved working for Boz, because, like me, he was a record pig. No research...no auditorium testing...no consultants...just a Whitburn Book, the old WARM charts, and a bunch of index cards. We used the card system at WSGD -- no music logs.

If it made the Top 40 between 1955 and 1975 we played it (with a few extreme exceptions) -- pure and simple. WSGD had something like a 2000 plus song playlist. Where else could you hear "Heartaches" by the Marcels and "Fire" by the Crazy World Of Arthur Brown within the same 30 minutes?

Later on when he would leave town, he used to leave me in charge. It was terrible. I think Doc Roberts hated me because of that. I could never figure out why, but at the time I was 19 and stupid -- an obnoxious kid who had no idea how the real world worked.

I remember the station then, with it's really wide playlist. What year was that?

I remember the thing starting in 1987 or 1988 and it was really popular. Mike Raymond was the GM starting it off, I think. You're right about the music, you could hear "People Gotta Be Free" by the Rascals then hear "Little Star" by the Elegants, cross over to some local stuff by the Buoys "Give Up Your Guns" and then wind up the set with an Elvis or Beatles mega hit. People of my generation loved the music. It was like the old WARM without the scratches, and as if someone broke into the studio with the richest kid in your classes record collection. They played everything!

The station flipped from country (WLSP) in August of 1988. I remember it specifically because I started there in November -- Thanksgiving Weekend -- Sunday night at midnight. I was given a two-hour on-air audition from midnight to 2am. I didn't have school the next day because we always got Monday off for deer season.

I went on at midnight right after SCOTTY YOUNG and the Stegmeier Ring-A-Ding Thing. The first song I ever played on the radio was "Treat Her Right" by Roy Head.

I remember it was 1988 though because I was a senior in high school when I got the job. I graduated in 1989.

Remember though, 'SGD was only under Boz's watch until about October of 1990. It was only really good the first two years. Once S&P took over, the usual trappings of commercial radio (tight playlists) started to rear their ugly heads.

Sorry if I go off topic, but Yonkster's line "Buoys "Give Up Your Guns" " grabbed me by the horns. I was watching WKRP in Cincinnati the other day and they ran one of those snippet contests where there's a few notes from a bunch of songs and the audience needs to know what they are. Johnny Fever was stunned when the 2nd caller got it right and won $5,000 because he thought it was too difficult. The first song on the snippet? Buoys "Give Up Your Guns"

Mike Is Soooooo Right! ... When I Returned to WSGD Part-Time After My Tunkhannock Adventure,

It Was A VERY Different Station Under "The Duke Of Doowop"

But Prior To That, I Had A Hell Of Lot Of Fun At Solid Gold 94!
