What was ever the appeal of Bill Maher?

I never get it. From the clips I saw of Politically Incorrect, he was a jerk...at one point comparing disabled people to animals or how the Vietnamwar was a "good" idea on his ABC show. Then on Real Time, while he was anti-Bush, he still seemed extremely dislikeable. I know there were more non-PC comics that came from around then which could actually be funny (like Married...with Children and Gilbert Gottried or George Carlin) and several shows and comics in the '00s with a twisted or non-PC sense of humor, but this guy always felt like he was only "half" joking and incredibly mean spirited. Like you can go back and watch old Leno or SNL and see how people laughed or enjoyed it, but not him and was a fan of those latter two when they were on. Now I think more people are critical of him, but what was ever the appeal of this guy?

You do realize you started a thread that is sure to ignite a political discussion that will end up getting shut down by Lance. This is a thread that is certain to go down in political flames, and deservedly so...

No, because I agree with some of his takes and still don't like him. But yeah, guess you're right, best to have someone delete it before that, as I don't have the ability after certain time passes creating a thread.

I think Maher is a comic genius, who has the ability to get his conservative MAGA guests to crack up at his jokes. He is able to get the left and right to laugh together. That in itself is an accomplishment.

To me, he's exceptionally mean-spirited and kind of makes both sides look bad for forming any kind of allegiance with him. Jay Leno and earlier South Park could also make both sides laugh, but in kind of a common group way, not a mean spirited way.

Some of it might be the appeal of a radio shock jock - wondering what he is going to say next and how far he can push the envelope and get away with it.
