What was I hearing on 1540 Saturday night?

Around 10 p.m. Saturday here in Southerin Indiana I heard English language programming on China (I believe it was called "China Now") on 1540 khz. It came in loud and relatively clear for a few minutes. I could hear a preacher underneath it (I think the preaching was from KXEL). Eventually, the preacher took over completely, and the Chinese programming was gone for good. Any ideas?

CHIN Toronto, ON. Multicultural format, and has Chinese programming on Saturday nights.

Sounds like you were hearing CHIN-1540 out of Toronto. They run 30kw at night (I think) and are a regular PEST in Central KY at night, usually covering up KXEL, which dominated this frequency until CHIN came along several years ago, CHIN runs foreign language programming with about half of it being in Chinese.

This might have been KGBC out of Galveston TX which relays China Radio International in English which I often receive in early evenings here in Kansas. Only 2500 watts during the day but not sure they ever power down at night.

See Wikipedia reference about KGBC: Struggling financially as Galveston recovers from the hurricane and the late-2000s recession, KGBC began leasing all the station's airtime to one of China's state-owned media companies, China Radio International, under a local marketing agreement in January 2010.

We had a similar discussion a while back and KGBC was mentioned as a possibility. Although it was pretty much decided that CHIN was the station being heard, the possibility of some problem with the KGBC night pattern was brought up. Last I heard they were routinely going to night power of 250 watts as required, but because of the age of the site and the number of hurricanes that have slammed through over the years the facility requires extra attention to keep it in tune. That said, I'd still guess that CHIN is the one being reported.

I remember thinking the same thing about KGBC. What a waste of a signal that's become.
In any case, I remember KGBC always came into League City (25 miles NW of Galveston) pretty well after dark. This was when I lived there in 2008 and 2009. If it was 250 watts then, it carried through the mud damn well. That said, I'm not so sure it was 2,500 watts, either. It's been so long since I've been gone that I can't speak to how it sounds nowadays.

I've heard that here in Atlanta as well on 1540. They were airing The Shuffle program around 3 to 4AM (Eastern). I had heard The Shuffle before as we have a local Chinese station here on 890.
Have you heard their business news programs? They're becoming a bunch of capitalists!
