What was (is) the worst Fresno radio station you can think of...

I've not been a fan of Fresno radio in some years, but....

Of all stations, when KARM was doing a different format each day of the week - that was bad.

Any thoughts on stations that should never have been seen...uh, heard?

I recall 92.1 in 1985 making a attempt to compete with KKDJ, don't recall the call letters I think it was KXMX, KQMX or KQMD ,but their slogan was COSMIC 92.1, the music was okay, but the imaging, quality sounded worst than a high school station.

It was Cosmic 92.1 KXMK, it was only on for 4 months from July- November 1985, their format was ROCK 40, before it became KHOT a Spanish language format. During those 4-5 months they raised their transmitter from 150 ft. to 329 ft.,to serve Fresno better, The station at that time must have had a low budget, If the format they had was on one of the big stations in Fresno in 1985 it could have worked. Well look at them now, A top 5 radio station in Fresno.I have to add it wasn't just because the signal was poor in Fresno, it was the studio equipment, is sounded bad in Madera. Is their anybody that remembers this station, One of the DJs Jay Brandon when to KKDJ right after the switch to spanish.

Hum, I guess that was after KUUL was long gone or still operating from the Avenue 15 studio - which was, uh, scary.

Having made a quick trip to LA today, oh, please, please, we need some real radio in Fresno. I know "The Sound" wouldn't last one book in Fresno but.....

Yes right after KUUL, which was Nostalgia before the switch and at that AVE 15 studio, the business office was in a home in a residential area.

I was In LA last week and was listening to "The Sound" and 98.7 which is the other AAA station there. Ya it would be nice to have that format in Fresno.

Am curious, what did you think of 98.7 - the old Star. Seemed as if the life had been sucked out of the station - mostly liners, not much else. Always am amazing at the limited number of signals in LA. LA should have Fresno's plethora of stations.

Speaking of KUUL and KHOT, did you ever catch KHOT when every third song was Country? Beach Boys backing up to Buck Owens.... Dating myself, I know, but that was a weird format.

Not that I'm intimate with all the Fresno stations, but the worst run stations I'm familiar with are the ESPN twins 790 and 1430. I have no recollection of hearing such a half-assed operation in my life. Their sound quality is embarrasing. I doubt their few advertisers actually listen to the spots. To go with that, it's not uncommon for one of the two, usually 790, to be in a dead air state.

First of all, to Kenrayc, KYSR - 98.7 is considered Alternative Rock rather than Adult Album Alternative and as Exkyno suggests it's not much of anything to listen to...mostly there to cause problems for KROQ.

As far as the number of stations for each market, I've worked in both and while Fresno is definately over radioed for it's population size, especially if you add some of the regional Visalia stations, but LA suffers no lack of signals and has more than Fresno and Visalia combined. And if someone could find a way to fit more in here, they would.

One of the challenges stations have serving this market is the geographical size. Some B's have problems covering it. A single stick class A can no way come close to covering the market. Even multiple Class A's on the same freq don't. Some stations (103.1, 107.1, 93.5) have synced two class A transmitters on the same frequency within the market and still do not cover it.

Actually I found "The Sound" more interesting than 98.7 KYSR, "The Sound' plays a lot of the Alternative 80s not heard since JACK left. 93.1 KCBS is programmed better than the Fresno JACK-FM was also. I've said this over and over, but Fresno needs a AAA station, the thing is who can program it right to work here.

As far as the old 1250 KHOT in Madera I don't remember them doing country every 3rd song. When the new KMAK 100.3 in Orange Cove went on the air they were mixing Country with 70s Classic Hits they went from Reba to Elton John, talk about a mixed up format.
