What was old is now new again. The classic 5 returns to KTLA

I don't usually watch Friends after News @ Ten or whatever they call it these days but I happened to have parked my clicker on KTLA tonight and immediately noticed the channel bug no longer references The CW nor uses KTLA in all lower case font and the "Nike-like swoosh". It's now back to the classic stylized "5" that was popular for much of the 1980's until 1995.

Much like WPIX-11 in New York, Tribune owned stations are returning to their branding roots pre-WB.

KTLA's webpage seems to be stripped of The CW references other than their programming but the "5" is nowhere to be seen for now.

I've always hated the WB/CW logos referenced with KTLA and am glad the "5" has returned even if in the form of an annoying channel id bug.

Now KCOP should bring back the Oval 13 and all will be right with the world.

Not just the Channel ID, but the news set, the mikes, and as of today the news vans, all bear the "Retro 5" logo. The only mention of The CW is in the promos and even the "5" can be seen there. I'm pretty sure station management belives The CW is living on borrowed time and is looking to a gradual tranistion as an indepandant station again

It is almost surreal seeing the old "5" logo back again.

Aside from that, the graphics already make the news presentation a lot better and more pleasing to the eyes.

I wonder, is KTLA News using the same graphic package that KTVU 2-Oakland/San Francisco uses?

Hopefully this will be the start of better news quality as for most of this decade KTLA fell far from grace and seemed to lose its news focus and identity.

I happened to watch the KTLA 10 p.m. news on Monday and was SHOCKED to see the new set! The new set looks great, but how in the world could they afford it in this economy? I know news sets aren't cheap. The last I knew they were at least $20,000.

I'm quite happy that they brought back their old logo. That brings back memories of KTLA from days gone by. Micah even mentioned something along those lines Monday night.

Did it seem that no one was ever happy with the old set? From the time they first received the set to just a couple of weeks ago, something would be changed or modified monthly. It seemed as if they couldn't make up their mind on what type of presentation they wanted. Very odd. At least that time is now over.

I love logo's that feature the channel number. Most viewers STILL identify their stations by number. Unfortunately, cable sometimes makes this difficult. As long as KTLA remains on Ch 5 on cable, this is a great move! (As a young boy, I still remember 1971 earthquake coverage from KTLA because of their unique logo...if that isn't a testimonial I don't know what is).

All the Tribune stations removed "CW" from their branding last year.

The Bad Part is that Hal Fishman and Larry McCormick can't be back in the News Room. I hope KTLA drops its HLN style news soon for more real news.

Look at San Francisco KOFY 20 once the WB reference and KBWB call letters were removed then KOFY attempted to become a great station again. and also I wish KBHK44 remove their CW affiliation but CBS owns KBCW44. For tribune its good that WPIX and KTLA removed their CW logo because CBS owns the rights to CW. and 2 CW programming is like ABC Family and MNTV is like Ion network.

The new branding looks very professional and classy. I liked the old branding that ended in 2004-ish but never thought the last branding with the "Angel halo" was appropriate for a newscast. This new logo and graphics package actually looks like that of a heritage news station that has evolved over the years to keep up with the times. Kudos to KTLA!
