What was up with 98Rock Last night?

Flipping through the dial last night, I was checking on 98 Rock to hear what
was on and noticed that seemingly every three seconds, the feed would cut out
for about a quarter of a second. I checked back at the 6AM hour and noticed
that the problem was fixed. What happened?

I heard that, too, a little past midnight. Sounded like there was a fault in the audio connection somewhere between the 98ROCK studio and the tower.

Either that or Clear Channel is experimenting with a new way to play commercials every three seconds during songs.

They were probably on autopilot, and there was no one around to fix it till the morning show people came in. That's the chance you take when stations don't want to pay someone to be there 24/7.

I've noticed this at other times, too. My first thought was an STL problem. Is 98Rock using a digital STL? Their STL path hops over Tampa Bay to the xmtr site, so that, and a shift in atmospheric conditions could cause that problem. I used to hear it occasionally on WWRM, as their STL path hopped over Tampa Bay from St. Pete to the Riverview transmitter site.

It's an STL problem

Been having it for a while now. We were working on it @ said time. Even T-1's drop out too. It's just one of those things that comes up and can be a PAIN to track down.

If it's repeating on a regular rhythm..it could be the digital converter in the Optimod (that happened in Atlanta) or the STL itself could be trying to "find" the best frequency among several assigned to the station. (That happened in Orlando)

We're dealing with several different issues since it's along hop. However our signal is banging since some dish re-alignment. It's does not seem to be inversions either since the timing is very erratic. It was once thought to be cell garbage, that's since been filtered to death. We're looking @ a possible receiver problem at this point. We're seeing the logged errors it's just hard to pin point what's causing them so we're looking @ one thing @ a time and trying to narrow it down. For those commenting about "auto pilot" we've got things set up so any errors or "gaps" are reported via remote control. Then it's over to the T-1. As I mentioned earlier we were working on the issue @ the time it was heard.

T-1's are the worst way to deliver audio from studio to tower. From the half second delay to drops everytime it storms...to the high monthly costs...not a good system at all.

1/2 second delay?? I've been on the air on the T1 and did live breaks and have heard no delay. OK. Yeah...there was a LITTLE bit of a delay. But a half a second????
