What was your first LP?

Here's a fun thread I found on another radio board. What was your first LP? The one that maybe made you want to do this for a living? Mine was a Stan Freberg LP. Had a very patient mom who I'm sure had no idea how many times I'd play it and how much I'd parrot back from it at the dinner table: "...ripped muh jeans...third pair this week".... hahahaha. You?

KDM...I know why it's funny. But life is short. Humor us. Play the game anyway.

What was the first recording you bought with your own money that formed who you are? Gave you some power? Differentiated you from your folks? C'mon, there's gotta be SOMEthing sick and twisted back there you can share with us!

Like the time I uncovered my dad's secret stash of Fats Waller 78's. OMG! You could just hear his parents turning in their graves when, in his 90's, he admitted to me he'd been smokin' weed in L.A.'s jazz clubs in the 1920's and 30's...

I don't know if it was the very first but the Beach Boys' "All Summer Long" with girls partially burying guys in the sand likely led to me moving to San Diego when I was 21.

the first album i bought as far as i know was a beach boys album in 1964 or 1965.i don`t remember the title or the songs i got it for.

the first album that led me to where i went was disrali gears by cream.that started my interest in progressave album rock .

Introducing the Beatles (the one on Vee-Jay with the 1962-vintage picture of the Fab Four on the cover), which I got for my 9th birthday in August 1964.

"Spike Jones Murders Carmen" - mid 50's. Special order. $1.

I still have it and it is as funny as the first time I listened to it. ;D

The U.S. version (on United Artists) of A Hard Day's Night (Beatles, 1964).

Or was I supposed to ask, "what's an LP?" ;D

My first 45 recording was purchased by my parents for me: "Too Much" / "Playing For Keeps" by Elvis Presley in about 1957. My folks enjoyed several of the fifties and sixties rock and roll hits with "us kids."

I spent my own cash on my first LP Album: "Meet The Beatles" in about February 1964.

Yes, music and radio have had a positive affect on me since my early childhood. :)

First rock LP - "More Of The Monkees" (my dad brought it home for me - which was AMAZING - he hated those "hippies")
Most important LP - "Why Is There Air?" - Bill Cosby (memorized every line; had to have everything else he did including "8:15/12:15" and "It's True, It's True")

When I spent some time with Dr. Cosby, before I brought him onstage for a Denver show, he exceeded every expectation I could have had - a true gentleman.

Most polarizing LP (which I won from WMYQ, Miami) - "Son Of Schmilsson" by Harry Nilsson - to understand this, you have to know the songs, "You're Breaking My Heart" and "Take 54".

First LP I can remember having was a Sesame Street Album.. Believe it was Ernie's greatest Hits.. Rubber Ducky your the one!! Oh yeah :D ...

But as far as real music album, The Cars Self Titled album was my first.....

The first LP I spent my own cash on was, I believe, Herb Alpert's "Whipped Cream and Other Delights", which was for a Father's Day present. My dad used to play trumpet, plus I was a huge fan of the Tijuana Brass. Like Stu, I later bought the Cosby album, "Why Is Their Air?" and most every album he came out with afterward. I think my first rock album was Three Dog Night's "Captured Live At The Forum", and the first 45 was the Guess Who's, "Undone", but I think they spelled it differently. I still have the original Three Dog Night album. If I remember correctly, I paid $3.29 plus tax at Globe, which was located at Tower Plaza.

Plus the album cover made a lot of dads and their sons smile! http://www.franklarosa.com/vinyl/Exhibit.jsp?AlbumID=39

My first album purchase was made at the local Firestone store for 99 cents. Those Christmas albums were hard to beat...all recognizable titles sung by recognizable artists. Even though their snow tires didn't give the '76 Gremlin any better traction, the Nurse and I tip our fezes to the folks at Firestone for launching the first All Ho-Ho-Ho album for the masses!

...in my case, there were three within a couple of days of each other:

Meet The Beatles!

The Beatles' Second Album

The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees

First LP was "Shut Down" featuring the Beach Boys. I bought it at a swap meet in 1964 thinking it was a Beach Boys album. Got it home and realized there were only 2 Beach Boys tracks (Shut Down and 409) and the rest were various artists doing car realated songs. Contained two Cheers songs from the '50's which was Bert Convey's first taste of show business.

Disappointed, I quickly saved enough to buy my first real album "Meet the Beatles" a few weeks later.

First album bought with my own money? It would have to be Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. Did it affect my career choices? Can't say that it did although there was a very brief period of time where I considered going into eyeglass-frame design.
