What we can learn from George Steinbrenner

I know this heading may sound strange on a dance music board, but with the death of legendary New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, there is a lot that can be learned from him that can be applied to us.

Love or hate the man, Mr. Steinbrenner had this DRIVEN passion to win at all costs. He did WHATEVER IT TOOK to win (buying the best players, firing managers left and right) and never quit in achieving his goals. Even though I am a Met fan, I respect what Mr. Steinbrenner has done which gives me further motivation for what we, as dance music fans, have to do to push for our music further.

While it is great that Wild 102.7 popped up in Atlantic City, we need MORE of these stations throughout the country. We have taken some bad "hits" as of late with the loss of Super 91.7 and iPartyRadio. But we must also continue to push for our music and NEVER GIVE UP supporting it.

"Hate" is part of the territory that we deal with. While you have the "obvious" (those that are fans of different genres of music that either DETEST or don't understand dance music), there are also those within dance music that "hate" as well for whatever various reasons they may have. Regardless of wherever the hate comes from, we cannot allow that to deter us from what we have to do as dance music fans as well as those within the industry, which is to "wave that flag" and become "cheerleaders" for our music. And by being positive and proactive in our approach, we can achieve MANY goals as opposed to being spiteful, condescending and "elitist" (in terms of saying what IS "dance music" and what ISN'T "dance music").

Now granted, we don't have the deep pockets of cash that Mr. Steinbrenner had in terms of getting the best players out there. But the one thing that we DO have, that we share in common with Mr. Steinbrenner is HEART. And just like in the play "Damn Yankees"...."ya gotta have heart!" It's that heart that drives us. It pushes for us because we just don't like the music, we BELIEVE in it!

For me, I wake up with dance music and will die with dance music in my heart. This is something that will never go away from me. Granted, over the years I've been "beaten up" on this and other radio boards since the coalition inception in 1994. Yet, someone in the industry put up a quote on Facebook that I will NEVER forget.

"A successful person is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks that others throw at"

And if that's my mission from here on, then get those bricks at me! Keep throwing them! Either or, I'm never going to quit doing this for all of us. This is my "thank you" to all of the artists, DJ's, clubs, and fellow fans that have entertained me over the years.

Unfortunately, it takes a passing away of a legendary person to put things into perspective and give a new "motivation" somehow. To that, we keep going! :) This is your music...live it! love it! but more importantly learn and motivate others to support it and not take it for granted.

Thank you! And thank you Mr. Steinbrenner.
