What were those songs really about about....and do I really want to know?

Timothy by the Bouys ...... cannibalism
Georgy Girl by the Seekers.... lesbianism
Brand New Key by Melanie.....sex
Those are some of the examples of innocent sounding songs that were probably not so innocent....can you name others?

"Afternoon Delight" Obviously about the rise to popularity of 5 Hour Energy Shots, a mere 40 years later...

Sorry, couldn't resist! It's hysterical how in our day, we had to "sneak" in mention of these subjects, where today, you just name the song: "I'm gonna F*$# you until you're sore".

:-\

"I Think We're Alone Now" could have been about sex, ditto "Little Children," but the "what happens next" element is ambiguous in both songs. Running deep into the woods, or wherever, in the middle of the night seems a lot of bother to go through just for a kiss. Same with the "Little Children" couple making sure the kids aren't around.

A few others along with what they're either about or supposedly about.,,,,

"Strangers in the Night", Frank Sinatra: Homosexuality. (My guess is that Frank was unaware)
"Some Velvet Morning", Nancy Sinatra/Lee Hazelwood: Incest (and possibly also drugs).
"Ticket to Ride", Beatles: I believe John Lennon said it was about a prostitute.
"Drive My Car", Beatles: In this case, I believe Paul said it was actually about drugs.
"Little Green Bag", George Baker Selection: Well....DUH!

And who can forget VP Spiro Agnew's indignant condemnation of the Doors' "Light My Fire" -- a drug song if he ever heard one. Except it wasn't. Now "Puff, the Magic Dragon," on the other hand ...

Georgie Girl was a hit during my rock-jock days; I seriously doubt this song had anything to do with lesbianism.

I'm with you on Little Green Bag, but you're on your own on Sinatra's Strangers and Nancy & Lee's Velvet. Interestingly, George Baker Selection's only other true "hit", if you'll pardon the pun, was a goose-bump raising spiritual interpretation of Una Paloma Blanca.

Strangers In the Night had nothing to do with homosexuality. Where did you get that idea????

The Police's "Don't Stand So Close to Me" (and for that matter, its lame '86 remake) were about an illicit teacher-student "relationship." The girl in the song was underage, if I recall.

As was the girl in Benny Mardones' "Into the Night." But Benny didn't exactly couch his intentions in fuzzy language.

This is an old rumor that had been going around a long time....at least back to the 70s and 80s, if not longer. It's also been suggested that Sinatra himself started the rumor with his initially being opposed to recording it. I personally don't know and don't care (and I can take or leave the song).

I included it in my list because I've been aware of the rumor for years. Google it. Here's an old thread...containing mostly silly stuff....that's a sample of what comes up

I just posted on "Strangers".  I'll go so far as to say that the allegation is plausible, but again, I don't know/don't care/don't particularly like or dislike the song.

As for "Velvet", It's been over 40 years since classical Greek Drama was a component of a history of world lit course that I took in college.  (Right around the time the song came out, actually.)  In the song Lee Hazelwood sings about "Phaedra," and Nancy Sinatra sings "Phaedra is my name".

So anyway, I went online for a little "refresher".  Turns out that the original "Phaedra"  was a figure who fell in love with her husband's son by a previous marriage.  Not exactly a wholesome or healthy situation, but still something less than incest.

Time had apparently "spiced up" my memory a little.  ;D

And then there was the issue of not what, but who, Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" was about! 8)

Turned out to be Warren Beatty, wasn't it?

Also, 100% agree with delta69's take on "Summer Wine". Hot! Probably also my favorite of the duets, although I liked all of them.

"Spiced up" mabye, but very interesting. Thanks for these fascinating insights! Nearly 5-years later, this is all news to me!

Carley has never said who it was..Warren was a guess by some.. Mick Jagger by others..I recall someone..I think a member of congress paid her 100K to get the answer..with the promise of keeping it a secret...which iirc she accepted...
pretty sure it wasn't me she sang about.....lol
