Jonestown incident 1978 KGO-TV had to pre-empt primetime programming to air the murders in Guyana. Note initial reports said Mass Suicide but subsequent evidence said that "The Peoples Temple" leadership ordered the 900 deaths to take place.

And now the actor who did the movie about The Peoples Temple is now dead. Powers Boothe the actor who played Jim Jones in the Jonestown movie back in 1980 is gone too. This is nearly 40 years after the Jonestown incident.

Yes - tough times in San Francisco. Most of the Jonestown residents were from SF. Then 9 days later - November 27, 1978, Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk (first openly gay supervisor) were assassinated by former Supervisor Dan White. Oddly, I don't remember where I was during the assassination - working that day, I guess - even though it affected me much more deeply than the Kennedys or Martin Luther King.
 
San Francisco seemed to have bad timing when it came to real-life events intersecting with sports events. The night of the Moscone/Milk shootings, the Steelers were playing the Niners at Candlestick. Fast forward 11 years later, Game 3 of the WS was less than 30 minutes away when the Bay Area earthquake hit.

And update that to 2014 when the American Canyon quake hit there were uncertainty over the first pre-season game at Levi's stadium for a 49ers game but that got cleared.

Here the Daily show had a clip where Los Angeles TV stations cover the former FBI leader James Comey get escorted by the CHP on the 405 freeway to the LAX airport once he learned that he got removed by the president Trump's cabinet.

Damn I saw this on KABC7 News on their news on feed and I thought this was some random chase at first. But It turned out that it was connected to the president.

I remember when the Israel Prime Minister was assassinated, i was shocked that ABC continued to show the Michigan-Michigan State college football game. You'd think they'd do a bulletin at some point.
 
The interesting thing is that when Roone Arledge ran ABC news, there were times when he had to choose between sports and news. Like the Rabin assassination and a football game. I think the shooting took place minutes before the Wolverines and Spartans took the field. Roone wasn't running sports in 1995 correct?
 
This past weekend's London attacks. I was watching it on Fox, CNN and MSNBC, in addition to listening to a live web stream from BBC Radio 4 in Britain(which had just gone off for the night and was carrying the BBC World Service overnight programs).
 
I can't remember what i was watching, but i remember when NBC and Tom Brokaw interrupted a show to announce that Tim Russert passed away.

In 2005, i was watching a movie on WLOS/13 late at night when Charles Gibson from the ABC network interrupted the movie for a bulletin. At first i thought it was about a hurricane, but then Gibson said that Peter Jennings had passed away. It was like 5 or 6 minutes into the movie when the interrupt took place. They went back to the movie, in progress at 12:10 A.M., and the movie was just an afterthought.

ABC was showing "bonus coverage" of the Michigan-Michigan State college football game when across the bottom of the screen it said that Yitzhak Rabin had been shot at the end of a rally in support of the Oslo Accords at the Kings of Israel Square in Tel Aviv. They didn't preempt the game for the bulletin, it was a crawl. Two years later, ABC did the same thing when Princess Diana was in a car accident in France, during a college football game between UCLA and Washington State. IN both cases there wasn't much fanfare- they switched to ABC News as soon as the game ended.

Note the Mass Shooting in Virginia is the most known assassination attempt on a member of congress since the Gabby Giffords incident of 2011.
 
Dang the last time we seen 3 breaking news stories come out at the same time was on 9/11/01. Amazing to think 16 years later we seen as of June 14,2017 there are 2 unrelated mass shootings in different parts of the nation and for different reasons.

I thought he did a fine job as Jones in "Guyana Tragedy." Much better than the earlier film "Guyana: Cult of the Damned," a Mexican-made cheapie with Stuart Whitman as "Jim Johnson" (dunno why they changed the name).

I saw a story recently on the murder of Henry Siliak in Bed-Stuy, just after midnight on 9/11/01. Due to the immensity of the events of 9/11, the story of his death in the media was non-existent, and police investigation of it by NYPD was poor, at best. Understandable, but sad, never the less.

And the Sacramento TV stations yesterday had to Pre-empt the other breaking news stories the London Tower fire, The Mass Shooting in Virginia and the Mass shooting in San Francisco to respond to a rumored mass shooting at Travis Air Force Base in Solano County, CA but it turned out to be a Security Training Drill at the Air Base but the panic of a rumored third mass shooting in the USA was at play here due to the other 2 mass shootings mentioned on this board.
